Alstonia venenata R.Br. … great joy to see a very different looking Alstonia (referring the leaves whose margins resemble to that of Polyalthia longifolia, the false Asoka, the flowers resemble to those of Holarrhena pubescens) This is becoming a popular landscape plant in Florida, USA.
a plant from Skandagiri, about 60 km from Bangalore, in the same range as that of Nandi Hills.
taken in wild, flowers fragrant, seed pods seen, please help with id. Decidedly Apocyanaceae, perhaps a Rauvolfia species. Can it be some Jasmine like fragrant white Confederate jasmine? I feel this not Rauwolfia rather some in and around Jasmine But doesn’t the seed pod remind one of the characteristic follicles of wrightia species? The sap was also milkly. This could be Alstonia venenata. But one needs to check the floral characters and foliage, fruits etc. before confirmation. Alstonia venenata from me too Yes Alstonia venenata . Two names for Alstonia venenata at ENVIS-FRLHT listed are: 1. sinnappalai
Would it be written in Tamil script like this: சின்னப்பாலை ?
சின்ன (chinna) = small, little
பாலை (palai) = could be a generic name for Alstonia spp. and some other plants, though not sure.
2. palamunnipalai
பழமுண்ணிப்பாலை, perhaps is shared with Mimusops kauki [syn. of Manilkara kauki (L.) Dubard]
Please validate. Both the names, சின்னப்பாலை and பழமுண்ணிப்பாலை, sound correct! I see two spelling variants:
சிந்நப்பாலை & சிந்நபால்லை … both appear on the same page, 1) in title and 2) in body text.
I have a feeling both must be in error. Agreeing with you …, சின்னப்பாலை is the correct one and the other two scripts don’t make sense to me either.
