. Climber with up to 10 cm long leaves with 12-20 pairs of opposite leaflets; flowers pink or white with pink tinge, on axillary pedunculate racemes; pod up to 4.5 cm long containing 3-5 seeds which are nearly 6-8 mm long, scarlet with black spot. In spite of being highly poisonous the seeds had been used for weights (Rati), and also for making rosaries. The seeds are not dangerous as long as the hard seedcoat is intact, but especially when they are drilled to be used in rosaries they are highly dangerous and can be fatal if ingested;
. The seeds are valued in making necklaces for their bright coloration. The roots are used for gonorrhea and jaundice. The oil extracted from seeds is used to promote the growth of human hair. The species is also used by the tribal against dog bites, backache, knee pain, mouth ulcers and stomach ache;

ID requested DSC4032: The seeds are of a creeper which has nearly dried. The green leaves are of the host plant. – There is a difference between CREEPER and a CLIMBER. This is for sure a climber, because Creepers cant climb!!! – Abrus precatorius Linn : (Local name–Chirmi, Family–Fabaceae). Gunj for ID : 050511 : AK-2: Taken at Jijamata Udyan, Mumbai, Maharashtra. Abrus precatorius (white seeded) Also I have seen green (with white) seeds of this. Is mutation responsible for this production of varied colored seeds or any cross-over? I never knew this plant is poisonous. In Tamil, it is called ‘Pilliyar kannu’ which transliterates into ‘Eye of L.Ganesha’; used for pressing eyes in clay idols. The red ones really are http://goldfrankstoxicology.com/cases/GTE_Abrus_Precatorius.pdf http://www.britishmuseum.org/explore/highlights/highlight_objects/aoa…
In spite of being highly poisonous the seeds had been used for weights (Rati), and also for making rosaries. The seeds are not dangerous as long as the hard seedcoat is intact, but especially when they are drilled to be used in rosaries they are highly dangerous and can be fatal if ingested. Yes just found out even white variety is poisonous http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15987020
Yes there are white varieties… I have seen photoged and collected white seeds of these… as curiosity in a hot house in NY, and at a students learning garden of an Ayruvedic college in India… local village gardeners said its used for doing magic… they seemed to be all afraid of the seeds…. I have seen only four colour-forms of Abrus precatorius seeds. But local nati-vaidhyas in TN say there is a green form which is said to be very rare and most efficacious among all. But I yet to come across with that. The attached picture is sourced from FRLHT (now IAIM)’s Image Library. Dear all please find the uses of Abrus precatorius in Orissa (this is a compiled information from different tribal districts of Orissa, where they use the same species for different purposes) Uses: The seeds are valued in making necklaces for their bright coloration. The roots are used for gonorrhea and jaundice. The oil extracted from seeds is used to promote the growth of human hair. The species is also used by the tribal against dog bites, backache, knee pain, mouth ulcers and stomachache. We have discussed this before on this site. Please check this link:

At the village foothills, dozens of Gulaganji plants exhibit wide open beautiful red-black seed pods, shining brightly in the scorching sun. They possess numerous medicinal values. But, never take anything at face value in nature – the small quantities are known to be highly poisonous & are known to kill live stock! Also, used in weighing gold.

KOONCH (কুঁচ) in Bengali + butterfly + teal found at the same place Very beautiful pictures. The butterfly in picture is Pioneer – Belenois aurota. The mating pair is just resting on the plant. Abrus precatorius aka the Crab eyed creeper is called ‘Goonj’ गुञ्ज in Marathi. It is larval host plant of Indian Sunbeam and Common Cerulean butterflies….. their larva are attended by ants. Thanks … for the interesting information.
The plant butterfly interactions are really interesting. I hope the larval host plants for Pioneer butterflies are from Capparaceae family. The Pioneer indeed does lay eggs on Capparaceae members like C.rheedi, C.sepiaria, C.spinosa, C.zelyanica, Cadaba fruicosa and Maerua oblongifolia…… Certainly there were many Capparis spiaria and C. zeylanica in that place. Thank you once again. The birds in the last shot are Lesser whistling Ducks. Requesting ID of this plant – Mumbai :01082013 : ARK-03 : February 2013 : Attachments (2). 7 posts by 5 authors. Abrus precatorius L. (Fabaceae) is a common climber in entire India and its seeds when mature, are beautiful. It is known by names like ‘Ratti’, ‘Ratigiri’, ‘Rattidani’ in Uttarakhand.
Roasted seed powder is known to be used as an abortifacient. Seed paste is used as plaster for bone fracture and decoction of root is used in fever, cough, rheumatic arthritis and dysentery. Nice pics and related information, thanks …

wonders of seeds and stories ! (mixed thread): …………………… This is the only seed I loved to collect in my childhood. I spent my early childhood in a town. Later, when I was 12, we moved to the village we are still living. After moving in to our new home, our own, I searched the surroundings. To my utter amazement I noticed the seeds of KUNCH in a wasteplace behind our new building. My mom told me that it was called KUNCH and it was used to weigh gold! From that day I regularly visited the place to collect KUNCH seeds. I had a small container filled with these beautiful seeds.
But later on, I have never found this vine anywhere. Even after becoming a member of this group, when I searched new places for new species, I have seen it only once in Hooghly. The 2nd time it was in Jhargram.
Someone told me that this vine can be seen in places where there is enough human excreta! Flora of Kaiga_Sharing_08092015 PK2 : 1 post by 1 author.
