This are  confirmed shots of Aerides crispa
“Yes to me, both seems to be Aerides crispa, ENDS WITH AN “A”!!
But the second flower seems slightly deformed in the sense that the
margin of the lip there is more spreading. But both are same.”
These are two Aerides shots
First by Ashok Captain. Second by Dr. Erach Bharucha. Are they both

Aerides crispum?

I would appreciate any help in identifying the orchid in the photo below.
It was purchased from a vendor at flower exhibition so can’t state the location of the plant in wild but the vendor was from Kerela.
He was also unaware of it local name.
The flower looks similar to Aerides maculosum but the inflorescene is solitary…

This beautiful orchid was seen flowering in Amboli Western ghats.
I think this is Aerides crispum please validate.

Aerides maculosum-050611MN: Sending photos of Aerides maculosum orchid growing in our balcony.  The
flower has slight fragrance.  This orchid was gifted by my friend Geeta two years ago and now it has started flowering.

Firstly it should be Aerides maculosa, ending with an ‘a’.
In the contrast can you share pics of Aerides crispa
You may please try to make a comparative plate of both. Both are found in your locality.

On second thoughts I have doubts over this :(….. being maculosa. Why not crispa… I am always confused..

Yes … It is A. crispa.  It always confuses

DV :: Query: Aerides crispa AND crispum: While compiling names for Aerides crispa Lindl., came across Aerides crispum Lindl.
Would go with A. crispum as orthographic variant of A. crispa … please validate.
1) A. crispum Lindl. is not found in The Plants List
A. crispum Lindl. is found in Wikipedia at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerides_crispum
Here, A. crispa Lindl. (1833) is put as synonym of A. crispum Lindl. (1833)
2) A. crispa Lindl. is put as endemic to the Western Ghats at the Orchids of Kerala …
http://enchantingkerala.org/kerala-orchids/kerala-orchids-aerides.php
A. crispum Lindl. is put as native of Malay Archipelago at Hortipedia … http://en.hortipedia.com/wiki/Aerides_crispum
Please help in resolving the fact here.

Going through The Plant List, IPNI and GRIN I find that Aerides is a feminine genus, and as such Aerides crispa should be the correct orthography, any reference to crispum in this genus may be treated as orthographic error.

In Flora of British India where all species are given neuter epithets, A. crispum is shown distribute in Western Ghats: Concan to Travancore.

Hortipedia link is interesting needs to be explored further.

My query had stemmed from finding that a thorough search on internet yields more results for A. crispum than A. crispa. Your clarification regarding use of neuter gender epithets in the Flora of British India is convincing.
The second part of query regarding endemism of A. crispa to the Western Ghats rose due to finding its entry in few white papers, listed here for reference:

It won’t be a big surprise if some species of Western Ghats have spread to Eastern Ghats, especially when authentic sources report that.

This excel file compiled by Dr.Narasimhan in the database at http://tnenvis.nic.in/database_bio.htm shows the name as Aerides crispa Lindl.

Tropicos.org of Missouri Botanical Garden has no clear literature for this particular plant.

Yes this species is reported from Western and Eastern Ghats both. Orissa is exclusive distribution. But this species is still supposed to be endemic to Indi and not found outside as per my knowledge.

Gender issues in names are as discussed by Gurcharan sir. Gender issue in botanical names are very technical so dont go into details. Just remember that it is “crispa” and this also emplies that all other species of this genus will end with an “a”.

Aerides maculosa

Mahabaleshwar.
The confusion between Aerides maculosum and Aerides crispum still remains for me.

Hmmm, technically maculosa should have spots much more prominent that crispa

Ofcourse there is difference in spur too, but I cant see spur in any of the flowers here.

Probably these photographs may help. Two pictures at different locations.
I am believing one as A.maculosa and the other as A. crispa.

Ok now I know a bit more.

The spur in Aerides maculosa will be pointed backwards, but in Aerides crispa it will be pointing forwards.
Please check the spur to confirm the identity of this plant…
…, can you please share two pics of flowers showing spur if you have?

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks … for raising this discussion of A. maculosa VS A. crispa.

Thanks to ,… or quickly surfacing the post again.

…, here are two views of same plant showing the flower spurs … I believe they are A. crispa28 MAY 11 … Mahabaleshwar … have already posted these in this fortnight …

Yes sir this is Aerides crispa. Spur is pointing forwards as you can see..

Thanks for sharing.
