Sunbird Picture- Please ID tree:
I took this picture of a sunbird-

Location- School of Ancient Wisdom, Bangalore
Date- Feb 1st week, 2012
Several sunbirds were enthusiastically dipping into these flowers– I think this is called a shaving brush or powder-puff tree? Was very difficult to get a decent photo as sunbirds are very restless, but managed after taking a lot of shots!
Please ID tree, and if possible sunbird species..

A species of Calliandra of Leguminosae family.

This is a female Purple-rumped Sunbird on a species of Calliandra.

GOLDFRONTED CHLOROPSIS
I was at Pachmarhi during 1981-1984. That is the time I got interested in birds , butterflies and plants. I used to record bird calls in the wild. One day I heard a sweet call which was coming from a mango tree near Pachmarhi lake. The call was not familiar to me so I wanted to locate the bird. With great difficulty I could locate the bird. I could identify it to be Goldfronted chloropsis or Leaf Bird ( with the help of Salim Ali’s book on the subject).

At this place I have photographed this bird on the flowers of Bottlebrush, Thunbergia Mysorensis, Rose Apple. Butea Monosperma and Calliandra. This bird is a good mimic. I am sure you have seen this bird somewhere. To refresh your memory I am attaching an image  of the bird taken today.

Rambling shrub or small tree with branched pinnate, silky leaves and powder-puff-like balls of conspicuous dark crimson stamens. Calliandra haematocephala is a fast growing shrub that can grow tall but also spreads wide. If desired it can be kept smaller by trimmed. Interesting enough the leaves close at night.
The red powder puff flower are attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds but only appear from November -April.
The buds before the flowers open look like raspberries.
This large shrub can be grown indoor if trimmed and grown in a pot but it will be best if you can grow it outside in a warm climate

Superb catch again … and the squirrel too is good one.

Calliandra haematocephala or Calliandra emarginata

Thnaks for reply. These photographs are taken by a relative who is not familiar how to take snaps of a plant. No other photos of this plant are available with me. Let us wait for some more opinions.

The leaf pattern is not suggestive of C. emarginata. It appears to be Calliandra hematocephala as suggested by … I hope it is a small and not a very big tree.

Yes, … It’s unusual. … has corrected the Bot id as Calliandra jamaicensis.

It might be Calliandra haematocephala “Alba”.
Calliandra haematocephala has red flowers (think haemoglobin!) and smaller leaflets.

Yes, …, could not locate it on the link. We can wait for further inputs.    https://www.facebook.com/groups/indianflora/6/

Calliandra haematocephala alba

Thank you … for ID…. The leaves looked bigger than the Calliandra haematocephala, is this the case for the ‘alba’ variety?

I think it is better to  watch out for the plant to bloom.

The alba variety has larger leaflets and is often a larger more sprawling plant.
