COSTUS SPECIOSUS: It is learned from “The Plant list” site that Costus speciosus is a synonym of Cheilocostus speciosus (J.König) C.Specht (http:// www.theplantlist.org/tpl/record/kew-343835) of Costaceae family. Lots of shuffling is happening. Hope this would be the end of most of the confusions, or I dont know it would lead more….. Mine have not yet commenced flowering this year. Sending a few of last years photographs. In Kerala this species has started flowering 2 weeks back itself.

Color of the flower – white, which attracts huge amount of red ants.

I grabbed this pic of a flower growing in IIT Bombay today. The plant had grown to about 1.5 metres and the flowers appeared to borne on a deep blood red pedicel (that’s what I believe it is called). I have attached two crops, one of the flower and the other of the leaves. Please let me know what flower it could be. This is probably Costus speciosus. Common in Sahyadri, especially in monsoon locally known as Koshtha or Pev. yes it is now known as Cheilocostus speciosus (J.König) Yes it is Cheilocostus speciosus (J.König) C.Specht of Costaceae family.

Photographed from TDL Herbal Garden Yamunanagar, pl. validate I hope the identification is right.. The name of this species has been changed very recently. Specht & Stevenson (2006) proposed a separate genus status for this species as Cheilocostus speciosus (J.Koenig) C.D.Specht (2006: 159) based on a new phylogeny-based classification of the family Costaceae. They choose C. speciosus as the type species based on Banksea speciosa J.Koenig (1783: 75). But this generic name is a later parahomonym of Banksia J.R.Forster & G.Forster and is treated as a homonym. Thus Cheilocostus is a replacement name for Banksea. However, already in 1791, Retzius had published a replacement name for Banksea, namely Hellenia Retzius. Thus, Cheilocostus is an illegitimate superfluous name for Hellenia.
Dr. Suchandra Dutta (2010) proposed a new combination based on this, as Hellenia speciosa (J.Koenig) S.R.Dutta (2010: 152) but she considered the basionym to be Costus speciosus Koenig ex Smith instead of Banksea speciosa J.G. Koenig thus the combination became illegitimate. However she rectified the mistake and legitmately published the name Hellenia speciosa (J. Koenig ex Smith) S. Duta later (Pleione 7(1): 28 – 29. 2013).
Goaverts (2013) published the same combination in same year (2013) as Hellenia speciosa (J.Koenig) Govaerts unaware of the second publication of Dr. Dutta (Phytotaxa 151 (1): 63–64; 2013). However according to the rule of priority the combination of Dr. Dutta is valid which hadbeen published earlier.
Thus the correct name is Hellenia speciosa (J. Koenig ex Smith) S. Dutta, Pleione 7(1): 228. 2013 Thanks … for detailed explanation of the latest name

I don’t know Bengali so i can’t guarentee it’s correct for the native name of Cheilocostus speciosus as ghorakukara from the reference, reads like native Santali though. Thank you very very much …, for help with the names.

Habitat : Wild Hellenia speciosa?? Please check H. meghalaynsis and H. paramjitii also. I have seen the paper describing these species. But I feel H. speciosa is a widely distributed species with a high range of continuous variation. Many characters taken for diagnosis are overlapping. .
