Again excellent Shots

My apologies. Please try this link

I can see the last link you have provided but not the two link the the first mail.
I am always confused with this plant.
The pic in the link looks more like Dendrobium ovatum.
But here there is the reddish tinge on the hypochile of the flower which is so different and looks like Dendrobium barbatulum.
Are you sure you dont have both plants in your garden?

Thank you … for your comments. Have both species of orchids on my property & both are currently flowering.
From my records over the past few years –
D.ovatum commences flowering in December [buds are sometimes seen even in Nov.]. Flaowering is at its peak in Jan. Flowering wanes from Feb. through April.
D.barbatulum generally flowers from Feb. to March.
There is also a marked difference in the colour & size of the flowers – D.barbatulum being much larger.
Am sending photographs of D.ovatum for comparison in a separate mail. The photographs were taken in Jan. this year. Have not posted them before because for me they are quite routine.

on open stony slopes
did not see any leaves only flowers

Nice find. Good photographs. You said ..it is on rock and not on tree?

I meant the trees were on open stony slopes and the orchids on them

yeah sometimes it is lithophytic that is growing on rock.. moss covered rock
it is leafless when it flowers 🙂

Yes … I know both types are possible. Earlier … had shared Aerides maculosa on moist rocks. Wanted to confirm the nature of above mentioned flowers in this case.

… , in picture you can see this orchid growing on moss covered rock as well as epiphytically … on Acacia auriculiformis plant which is not good host plant said …
Both pictures are taken last year

It is indeed surprising to know that it could grow on Acacia auriculiformis! indeed surprising!!

It is my pleasure to share a few images of Dendrobium barbatulum (Orchidaceae)
Habit: Epiphytic
Habitat: Montane forests
Sighting:  Bababudangiri, Chikmagalur, Karnataka, about 1700 msl
Date: 10-02-2015 and 11-02-2015

so do i understand that they all flower at end of monsoon?

Wonderful pictures sir.
…, its not easy to understand if they depend on rain or on summer heat.
During summer plants tend to loose their energy and when it reaches towards the exhaustion just before that the plant put all strength to flower. Or, The plant almost dries up and when it gets monsoon showers then it rejuvinates by producing the flowers. In both cases, rain actually help in providing energy for the fruiting because all plants invest a lot of energy in producing fruits. This is my hypothesis. To understand this, one has to understand the extact time of flower initiation and not the time of flowering.

so what is the lag time between the bud formation/ flower initiation and ultimate flowering
bud forming would have to be defined microscopically?

Lag time differs according to species. Very few studies has been there in orchids on this subject.
In some plants its very slow and sometimes flowers even remain for months but there are species which flower literally for just one day or even less.
