…, the green are the unripe berries and red ones the ripe berries of Mukia maderaspatana, also known as Madras pea pumpkin. It is supposed to be a climbing herb used in traditional medecine.

Mukia maderaspatana undoubtedly

Picture shows it is a climber and not a shruby sp. 100 %. So Not from Solanaceae but from Cucurbitaceae,

Thanks a lot for the ID help and clear definitions.
I feel some of the species listed below appear morphologically similar, but are distinct in true sense.
1. Citrullus colocynthis, a sister species of watermelon (C. lanatus).
2. Mukia maderaspatana / Madras pea pumpkin
3. Solanum kinds

Not to confuse cucurbits with Solanum species. Cucurbits are usually climbers with tendrils, not found in Solanum. Most important, curcubit fruit has a scar at the tip showing position of attachment of floral parts, not found in Solanum.
Yours is surely Diplocyclos palmatus, as suggested by …
flowersofindia

Will be grateful sir, if you could kindly indicate how to distinguish the two species, Mukia and Diplocyclos, since fruits looks so similar. I thought the  leaves seen in the second pic are of a different plant, isn’t it?

…, I will post the photos of Diplocyclos seeds which can help for the differences between two sp. In Ayurveda seeds are used as medicine. In the photos there are no leaves seen that’s why it is confusing for ID. But it is not solanum sp. 100 %. 1.There is no calyx present at the base of fruit 2. No thorny structure, 3. No dried thorny shrub at surrounding, 4. Most probably most of the solanum sp. fruits turns Yellow and Orange (may be red in S.indicum) after ripening. 5. When plant gets dried fruits also get dried and not ripened and fresh.

Yes … Thanks, I have no doubt about this not being Solonum species, my query to  … was how to differentiate btw. Mukia and Diplocyclos, since the berries of Mukia too are very much like the ones seen in the pictures.

I have not seen the two in nature but from available information I gather that berries of Mukia maderaspatana are smaller usually less than 1 cm and bristly when young. The berries of Diplocyclos are uasually larger than 1.5 cm, glabrous when young with faint white lines.

… fruits of Mukia maderaspatana are just about the size of regular pea …
while that of Diplocyclos palmatus are quite large in this context … as large as sphere made by 50 paise OR 1 Re coin.

These are fruits (leaves dried here) of Diplocyclos palmatus for sure.
…, had you observed the seeds, you would have seen their amazing structure like miniature “Shiv Ling”.

Zehneria indica (Lour.) Keraudren, Fl. Cambodge, Laos & Vietnam 15: 52 52
1977 Syn: Melothria indica Lour.; Melothria odorata Hook. f. & Thomson ex C.B. Clarke
Climbing herb with tendrils; leaves usually 3-lobed, cordate, 4-7 cm long, petiole 3-4 cm long; male flowers in clusters, white, corolla hairy; female flower single; fruit 1.2-1.5 cm across, globose, finally orange.
Photographed near Dakpathar on September 16, 2011

I think you are right. This is Diplocyclos palmatus (L.) C. Jeffrey (syn: Bryonia palmata)
Yes I had also seen the same links for Zehneria and was unsure about white patches on fruit and much shorter pedicels especially in female flower.
Thanks for pointing it out and making me correct my identification..

I agree with the ID: Diplocyclos palmatus

Cucurbitaceae Week- Ctenolepis garcini from Chkrata and Morni Hills:
This one is Ctenolepis garcini (Linn.) Clarke, Fl. Br. Ind. II: 629; Sicyos garcini Linn., Mant. 297, 1771;
Blastania garcini Cogn., DC., Mon. Phan. 3: 629, 1881
Vern.: Shivlingi.
A pretty annual climber. Stem more or less scabrous. Leaves deeply 5-lobed, membraneous, loosely villous on both sides, bracts stipuliform, ciliate. Flowers light-green, small. Fruit globose, 1 x 1 cm, red when ripe. Seeds enclosed in mucilaginous sap. Photographed from Chakrata, September 2011 and Morni Hills, October 2010.

But this one is too close to Diplocyclos palmatus (L.) C.Jeffrey
Hope to know any striking difference.

I think … is right
Ctenolepis is very distinct in having a large ciliate foliaceous ciliate bract at the base of the petiole. Also there is a single female flower at the base of male raceme. I can’t see the foliaceous bract and rather two female flowers together.

It does appear to be Diplocyclos palmatus.

I was checking the old images of Diplocyclos palmatus and came across yours- the leaves appear different from other plants posted on this page. Could you let me know if the habitat ‘garden’ means that it came up naturally or was planted from seeds gathered from some other locality. The lobes of the leaves are much narrower- in your specimen collected in January (others have by and large been collected during and post monsoon period.

Yes it’s Diplocyclos palmatus only,

Seems to be fruits of Trichosanthes indica (Beng, Telkucha), the climber is already dead, the fruits await ripening (then turns red) and dispersal through birds

This should be the Lollipop Climber, Diplocyclos palmatus of Cucurbitaceae.

It looks like Diplocyclos palmatus.
