Hibiscus with unusual leaves from Bangalore-GSSEP3/122 : 6 posts by 2 authors. Attachments (3)

The flowers look like any Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, but leaves look very different, almost rounded in outline and nearly entire margin, please help with ID.

Photographed from a nursery in HSR layout area in Bangalore on September, 16, 2015

it is a hybrid, hence there is a variation I suppose.

For me It is Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. Plants with rounded leaves are common here. I have a plant like this with different colour, but same type of leaves. As suggested by …, it could be a hybrid variety.

This is a variety of H. rosa-sinensis. Since there are number of varieties of this species all over the world, India is the house of so many unknown varieties which makes difficult to identifying or naming the particular variety.

This link may be helpful to know the different kind of leaf shapes and morphology:
Hibiscus world
Many varieties like Australian Rose, Prolific, Mac’s Delight, etc. have round leaves.

Is this Hibiscus Rosa-chinensis ‘Snowflake’?

Kindly confirm.

variegated leaves…
snowflake may be a hybridizer’s name …
question is is it registered with the hisbiscus society?
one needs to persue that…

predators of hibiscus: There is a large bush of Hibiscus rosa sinensis (Jabakusum) in  my ‘garden’.
This is the flowering time and it should give  about a dozen flowers this time. But with the predators present one gets only 3-4 per day. The worst part is that the orange beetle literally eats the petals. Thought I would send the photographs of the ‘mantis’.

The beetle is a species of Mylabris. The ‘mantis’ is actually an immature ‘Ak grasshopper, Poekilocerus pictus’.

Yes i think petals eaten by insects

This is the most common type if Hibiscus rosa sinensis.. and the petals have not been eaten by insects rather
the margin of the petals are wavy… which gives it such an appearance.

Malvaceae week 0905- 9112011 UD 015 Hibiscus PINK Peeping at the rising Sun:

Familiy:            Malvaceae
Subfamiliy:           Malvoideae
Tribe:                       Hibisceae
Genus:                        Hibiscus
Species                           Hibiscus rosa chinensis PINK
It was at the early morning preconference tea time.. at the Consciousness conference the RK mission, GOlpark…
this hibiscus seeked to play hide and seek wityh the sun.. and the rays would move away and back again…
we watched it a while then it dawned on me that I had a camera with me…
here’s the result…. Enjoy. I did and still do..

Nice play of light and shade! Well captured.

This is the flower that taught me to focus on the breeze stirred (never to stay put) stigma peering out at the world…
my dad had me practice moving my kodak browny ever so slightly on the stigma while peered at the tiny 1.5 cms glass viewer…
Have come along way with a 3 inch LCD display on my digital camera ,,, this is about 50+ years later, but when I went to the garden to practice using the new digital contraption, I gravitated towards this flower, practiced on a familiar face, seven seas away..
Just as it is obligatory for any new gardener to plant a few hibiscus plants… its obligatory for us to photograph one carefully…
so it goes….
THE OBLIGATORY RED HIBISCUS… Jasud, Jaba, and today I found the name RUDRAPUSHPA … what an interesting name….
Family:                Malvaceae
Subfamily:           Malvoideae
Tribe:                   Hibisceae
Genus:                 Hibiscus  L.
Species :             Hibiscus rosa- sinensis L

I realised the beauty of this plant when we planted 3 plants in our garden.
Deep green serrated leaves and blood red flowers- no wonder it is a darling of goddess  Durga.
This time I observed it bloom between 6:30 and 7:15 in the morning. Tried to capture it in camera.

Thank you for sharing, very nice, and you really captured the light increasing to predawn to dawn and daylight…. very red…

I am sending this in to ask what is this weird set of petals in this otherwise “normal five petalled hibiscus I bought.. about 3-4 weeks into being on  my balcony this flower appeared…   only one of this weird kind
… have had five or six similar ones since then… all were like the normal first flower…. picture  is included of the first normal one…

Any ideas???  Any thing I can do to further examine this phenomenon?   Is it common? etc etc… have many questions…

Petaloid staminal tube can be a simply an anomaly

nice to know the nomenclature… Petaloid staminal tube– very apt…

Has such anomalies been been written about?  what could cause it?  or are these hybrids vulnerable to such anatomical changes… most of these hybrids of tropicals are coming from Thailand… do you think may they have inserted some mutable genes that only occasionally express themselves…
If you know of a book or paper please send me the ref… thanks
something similar happened to one of my euphorbia milli…. I’ll upload the pic if I can find it…

I am not completely aware of the perfect resason for the anomaly. I dont think its due to an insertion of mutational gene by the horti- culturalists, because they wont make so much efforts for a simple
garden plant. It may be due to simple chromosomal or physiological abnormality. I am attaching a very old paper from 1947 which deals with similar kinds of abnormality in Hibiscus esculentus (lady’s finger). Hope you will enjoy reading it.

But have i missed something on rosa sinensis and chinensis?

No, … they are used interchangeably throuh out the literature….

one example: I quote ” Hibiscus rosa-sinensis and Rosa chinensis are known as China Rose in the common language however both are distinctively different in appearance , growth habits and flowers. Therefore we will
discuss them one by one. ” end quote,    is from URL:
http://www.agriculturalproductsindia.com/flowers/flowers-china-rose.html
Internet is replete with such ambiguities and so are the old vs new books.. do not know which is preferred, may be… et al would know….

there is no such species Hibiscus rosa-chinensis.. its Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Linn., it was first given name by Linn. in 1753. we have to follow the same name… even if it may be right or wrong..

I have since discovered that it has a name…
Hibiscus rosa-chinensis ‘Waimaea’…
I had not done it, never expected it… but apparently it has slight scent

I am of the same opinion as ….
There is no species like Hibiscus Rosa chinensis.
http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl/record/tro-27801139
There is species named Hibiscus Rosa sinensis.
http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl/search?q=Hibiscus+rosa-sinensis

*Rosa chinensis* is a valid species but it belongs to family Rosaceae.
I request … to comment on this; so that the doubts will get cleared and we will start using the correct name
henceforth even if both names are accepted.

Id of a Malvaceae shrub : 7 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (1) – 3 mb.

Request for identification of a Malvaceae shrub from Mahe. Photographed in November, 2019. Is it Hibiscus rosa-sinensis or some other species. Leaves are trilobed.

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis !

Leaves of H.rosa-sinensis  are  quite different. Check for Hibiscus mutabilis. Confederate rose.  Also watch for the change of colour in the flowers .

I guess Hibiscus rosa-sinensis has different shaped leaves.

Thank you very much … The flower colour does not change. In fact H. mutabilis is also present in the same campus. The trilobed leaves and clustered flowers looked different from the commonly seen China rose. Perhaps this seems to be a mutant variety.

I am attaching one more close up snap.
