Straggling Shrub for ID, Auroville, Tamil Nadu NAW-MAR17-10 : 6 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (6)

Kindly identify this straggling shrub with ornamental orange flowers, photographed at Auroville, Tamil Nadu in a private garden in March 2017.

Habit similar to Bouganvillea vine but not having any spines. My guess is that it is an exotic species.

Cup and Saucer plant?

Holmskioldia sanguinea

Yes – this is Holmskioldia sanguinea following your hint i found it in the flowers of india website.

One of the ornamental plants in Mysore city. A hardy shrub. The shrub is also in full bloom nearby my house. The habit is similar to Bougainvillea. In fact from a distance the plant can be easily confused for Bougainvillea. I will upload the photographs in a separate posting, as there is no provision to attach a file to this thread.

Holmskioldia sanguinea. Known as Cup- and- saucer plant or Chinese hat plant.
I have a plant with red flowers. Didn’t know there is a variety with yellow flowers.

Yes Commonly the flowers are reddish.

In fact the name sanguinea indicates the colour red
The plant List mentions two other synonyms which may be due to colour variation.
Needs further exploration.

Holmskioldia sanguinea,

cup and saucer

Isn’t Breynia retusa known as cup ans saucer plant ? Those flowers are different !

It is not Breynia retusa. The earlier identification is correct, i.e. Holmskioldia.

I know it is not Breynia retusa. But I was reffering to the common name Cup and saucer plant. I thought “Cup and saucer” is the common name of Breynia retusa.

Need ID of this plant from Panchmrhi, Madhya Pradesh.

12 December 19

Holmskioldia sanguinea Retz.

yes, Parasol plant, a lamiaceae. or popularly known in Florida as a cup and saucer plant.
the color i remember was orangish red flowers. not this bright dark red, blood like color
when i first saw it almost 40 years it was in a nursery Florida near the highway on the way to Miami.
it was so unique we all were impressed and remember to this day.
but were sad when locally, and this unique plant, later escaped and became weedy
some very nice herbarium pages
MY question, … is this an isolated plant or is it part of a colony?

Thanks … Only single plant of mentioned species is growing on bank of small pond.
