Tree for ID : Pink flowers : Nainital,Uttarakhand : 310313 : AK-2 : 5 images. 6 posts by 3 authors.
Seen this tree with pink flowers by the roadside growing wild on way to Nainital on 23/3/13.
Common tree along the road, seen in many places….all in bloom.
Some Indigo?

It is Indigofera heterantha. Very common plant inside pine forest and found up to 2500m.

I don’t think I. heterantha can grow to become a tree. It is at the most a big shrub.

It looked like a small tree, not a large one.
Could be a big shrub.
I am unable to differentiate.

Adding one more picture for id. Close up of flowers.

QUERY AND ID REQUEST OF PINK FLOWERING TREE/SHRUB ON IN SHIVALIK FOOTHILLS : 8 posts by 3 authors.
Could the members of the esteemed group provide an identity for this flowering tree/ shrub growing on slopes of the Shivalik foothills, Village Kahianwala, 20 km from Chandigrh. Pixs taken on Monday, Feb. 20, 2017. It is very uncommon in this area. Local say it flowers in the current season and is named, ‘Makhi’. Perhaps, the local name stems from an abundance of bees and small insects that buzz around the pink shower.

This is for sure Indigo, a common flowering shrub of Himalayas… The species can be Indigofera heterantha….!! Thanks for posting …

Thanks very much, …
Could this be Indigofera pulchella?

Is this common in the Shiwalik foothills?
Could you please cite some information on this species, which would be of interest to a reader?

You can see the relevant information on: /species/a—l/f/fabaceae/indigofera/indigofera-heterantha
And I. pulchella is a synonym of I. cassioides, which is also reported from Siwaliks and is more frequent compared to I. heterantha. The plant you have posted is not very common in the area.

Yes, it cannot be denied i.e. I. cassioides, in fact I need to see these again and record careful observations. Same is the case with many other genera for me.
I think the “Neel” production from natural sources have largely been replaced by synthetic chemicals. These two species are not being used, they yield small quantities and that too inferior quality, thus not worth commercialising.

Thanks, … How could we distinguish between I. heterantha and I. pulchella?
