generally ipomeas are not used in prayer offerings, but this one is… common here …

Ipomoea quamoclit L. from Hooghly:

Found this wild creeper-twiner which was a common ornamental once.
species : Ipomoea quamoclit L.
habit & habitat : wild creeper-twiner
date : 25/9/12, 1.45 p.m.
place : Garalgacha (Hooghly)

Very common houseplant for those who love weird shaped leaves… esp in the snowy north east states and UK, Canada.. In tropics has the potential to escape and become a nuisance… though small birds seem to like the seeds to eat..
in gujarat this called Ganesh Vel… flowers from now till Diwali.. so coincides with Ganesh chathurthi….
Grows in South 24 paraganas also , planted and then garden escapee.. Dont know its Bangla naam…

According to “Plant Groups” (H Mukherji, p 1108) the Bengali names are 1. TARULATA, 2. KUNJALATA

Convolvulaceae Week : Ipomoea hederifolia from Dak Pathar:

Sorry Name appears wrongli This Ipomoea quamoclit

Yes Ipomoea quamaclit

This photo here
shows how the pedicels of this species partially reflex on healthy living tissue , but when the tissue dies completely , the pedicels can look fully reflexed.,,and this illustrates some of the difficulty with dried herbarium specimens because on many Ipomoea the pedicels of healthy Living tissue is fully erect, but depending on exact conditions upon drying the pedicels can look to be ‘reflexed’ and this exact situation has caused people who will ‘swear’ by their favorite experts vouchered herbarium specimen can then proceed to go into the field , look for plants that have reflexed pedicels and post the completely wrong species on University and other ‘big name’ sites…and will not even consider that their ‘vouchered’ specimen could lead one to misinterpretation of what the structures on a living plant actually look like…
The type of mistake that I have just cited above would not occur if the field researcher was properly instructed by someone who really knew the plants , like someone who has grown them and observed the development of all the structures from beginning to end , including what the tissue looks like when healthy and alive and what the structures look like if diseased, partially decomposed and / or completely dead.

Yes, this Ipomoea quamoclit was successfully crossed with Ipomoea coccinea to produce the new species of Ipomoea sloteri
scroll down the page to see my comment
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/662/
Ipomoea quamoclit has a 2n=30 and Ipomoea coccinea has a 2n=28 and although the initial filial generations had unstable and varying chromosome counts , some of the offspring eventually stabilized as an auto-tetraploid
Ipomoea sloteri (created under laboratory conditions) is one of the extremely rare true inter-specific hybrids within the Ipomoea genus.

Hope that is helpful (even if indirectly)…

Thanks for this information about Ipomoea stoleri. By the way since it is a hybrid between two species and subsequent duplication of chromosomes, it would be an allotetraploid or amphiploid. This phenomenon is common in genera Tragopogon and Senecio of Asteraceae. In fact I had described one such species Tragopogon kashmirianus G. Singh in 1976, substantiated by molecular studies in recent years.
