Magnolia grandiflora: Magnolia grandiflora Grand pictures of a gradiflora flower… Can you show the undersurface of leaf?? The leaves look slightly different to me. This appears more close to M.pumila, an erect garden shrub. The local name is correct. Talauma mutabilis I think … got it correct! The leaf shape (whatever can be seen) is typical I guess. Recollecting another discussion in our group.
possibly M.grandiflora. Now correctly known as Magnolia liliifera (L.) Baill. Incidentally Magnolia liliiflora is a distinct species with flowers purplish on outside.
SYMBIOSIS: 226: Magnolia Grandiflora used to be a common garden plant at Cooch Behar. Times have changed and people don’t have space to maintain a small garden. Still you can see few plants here and there. During my stay here upto 1973 I did not notice its fruits. In 1979 while in Army I saw the fruits (quite a number of them) at a place near Chail ( Simla Hills ). Recently my friend … informed me that he saw Jungle Crow eating the seeds of Magnolia Grandiflora. But I have not noticed any bird eating the seeds of this plant earlier. Today I captured an image in which a male Koel is eating the seeds of this plant. Attching that image
Magnolia grandiflora L. from Nahan-2011: This is Magnolia grandiflora L. captured from “Bara Taalab” in Nahan Town in April 2011. A well acclaimed ornamental.

Magnolia grandiflora? Magnolia by any chance? Yes, it is Magnolia grandiflora. . Magnolia grandiflora from Kashmir: Magnolia grandiflora L., Bull Bay, Southern Magnolia
A very commonly cultivated evergreen tree in Kashmir, with large creamish white fragrant flowers and leathery leaves, rusty on the under side. Commonly planted in Moghul gardens. One tree was in Kurukshetra Uni Garden. But even after stay of 6-7 years in KU we could not see its flowers I am sending this of a Magnolia grandiflora flower photograph taken in a park in Auckland, New Zealand on 18th December, 2009. Why the Magnolia grandilora is larger in Eastern part of the country than Kasmir. Though long time ago a mali from Shere-Kashmir-Internation Comfrence Centre tolm me that it is not M. grandiflora. The gradiflora has large It may be one of the several cultivars / hybrids of M. grandiflora.
Pl check this: Ncsu The Magnolia grandiflora grown in Kashmir I think has largest flowers I have ever seen. The bud may be as long as 15 cm and fully opened flower may measure 20-25 cm in diam. These are at least one and a half times as large as flowers I have seen in California. In our childhood days we would pluck a bud and keep it in a vase (or simple a tumbler) of water. It would slowly open and may last up to 10 days or so, spreading fragrance all the time. I have seen specimens of Magnolia grandiflora, some even in California but never seen such magestic trees and such large flowers as seen in Kashmir.
Even flowerbud may be as long as 15 cm, and if plucked and kept in a flower vase it may open and remain fresh even up to 10 days, emitting fragrans all this time. This one was photographed from Nishat Garden

This tree I had initially thought to be some Magnolia sp. but distinctly serrated leaves create confusion. Please help in ID. I think it is Magnolia grandiflora only, may be a hybrid/cultivar. Majority of the leaves in the pictures show usual entire, wavy margins, and of course the flower is typical. It is interesting to know they have serrations, too

These photographs from California show fruits with seeds hanging by slender threads (funiculus). I did not notice that when I made a comment that trees in Kashmir are much more majestic, taller with larger leaves and much larger flowers, but now I realize that perhaps the specimens from California, which are rarely more than 5 m tall, with smaller leaves and flowers may actually belong to the cultivar ‘Little Gem’. Please validate, I am attaching more photographs I endorse … ID i.e. Magnolia grandiflora. Professor ji is always right. I too have similar photographs taken during my visits to California . This year the Magnolia Grandiflora tree in our garden was in full bloom. This plant was brought from Tezpur (Assam) in 2003. Recently I observed a Common Jay butterfly settling on the leaves of this tree. It was selecting the tender leaves. I observed it for few days. Literature says that Magnolia Grandiflora is one of the host plant for this butterfly. Ataching an image of this phenomenon. The tree is under observation to see the larva and the life cycle.

Beautiful. M. grandiflora ?? Thanks. Although it looked like Magnolia grandiflora to me as well, not aware of the Species in Atlanta. the first seed pod is not of grandiflora– that’s all i can tell you Magnolia grandiflora, undoubtedly. i am not so sure. the number of scales? Scales are a match as well – http://hort.uconn.edu/detail.php?pid=274

gosh. what camouflage. how in the world do you ever see it? thanks for sharing Please identify the Magnolia sp. from the house I was staying. It is a shrub-8 year old and for the first time it flowered. It is white in colour, mildly fragrant. Flower size is 7-9” across.
It looks like Magnolia grandiflora from the USA. It’s one of the evergreen magnolias and can have a slightly fruity fragrance to the flowers. Thanks for ID … But Magnolia grandifloras have bigger leaves, flowers are appx. 12” in size and more fragrant than the one in question. Though the back of the leave has the character of M. grandiflora. This one though an eight year old tree-still bushy, smaller leaves and mild fragrance.
