Trevia nudiflora L. is a large deciduous tree. Leaves opposite,
ovate, acuminate, glabrous and bright green above, base cordate, 3-5 nerved, petioles 2.5 to 8 cm long, stipules minute, acute, soon falling. .
Trewia nudiflora and Trewia polycarpa are two different species, where as former is found through out the country and later (with glabrous infls. and 2 locular ovary is distributed only in peninsular India (Saldanha). (As per the Forest Trees of Western Ghats book (authored by ex-IFS Mr S G Neginihal))

As per efi thread: Male flowers have red calyx here (in M. polycarpus), whereas M. nudiflorus male flowers have greenish calyx.. .
The fruits of Trevia nudiflora are non-succulent, large, and hard and are tasty tit-bits for Rhino’s palate. And the seeds are deposited on dung-fertilised mud banks. So all along the river banks frequented by rhinos, trevia trees have consolidated their hold on the the land.

In Dr. Almeida’s flora Vol IV -B pg 354, it is mentioned that Nicholson et al (1988) attribute underground water indicator properties to this species. The pictures attached are from the Dr. Salim Ali point trail at the south end of the forest in Mumbai which is very much sourrounded by lakes.
We generally spell the generic name of this tree as Trewia but as per Kew Plant List the accepted name is spelled as Trevia and I have followed the same. A short explanation is give about the same in Dr. Almeida’s flora Vol IV-B pg 354- and I quote ” The generic name Trewia is commonly used in taxonomic literature. However, the article 13.4 passed at Syndey Congress accepts that generic names first published in Species Plantarum should be accepted with same spellings as correct names”. leaf blister on Trewia nudiflora from Hooghly: Attaching images of Trewia nudiflora leaves infested with blister disease. A search in the internet tells me that these blisters are caused by a fungus – Taphrina (http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/333773/leaf-blister).

Moreover, a majority of these roadside trees are infected with these blisters, some severely while others are mildly.

I do not know if these blister like growths are called leaf-blister or they are called ‘galls’. But the species is the same as in efi thread and the same has been identified as Trewia nudiflora by Dr. … and … . Tree for id 121209MK1: Please id this large, common riparian tree found in eastern ghats valley. I suspect this belongs to Euphorbiaceae. Fruits 1-1.5inch across; leaves glabrous. Gmelina has yellow flowers that are larger. No, No… I did not mean to ID as G. arborea.
Was comparing the leaves of the plant you posted … they are not cordate, but their base has the shape of G. arborea leaves.

The search result also yields pictures from this group. There is almost nothing outside this efI circle.
On the other hand a search for Trewia nudiflora yields images and data outside the above efI circle and some of those results matches with uploads from me, … and some other members.

This may be Mallotus polycarpus (= Trewia polycarpa). But this website Mpbd says T. polycarpa Benth. and T. nudiflora L. are same species! Yes! This is Trewia nudiflora of Euphorbiaceae Have many Trewia nudiflora [Petari / Petani] trees on my property at Shahpur [the photographs of which are available in the archives of this group for comparison]. I do not agree with this diagnosis. I have also noticed the differences and i have mentioned it at the top of this post. Trevia nudiflora is recently transferred to Mallotus based on molecular studies and is now called Mallotus nudiflorus. For this purpose, in order to avoid a massive nomenclatural landslide, the name Mallotus has been conserved against Trevia. However, me and Dr. Balakrishnan still consider that Trevia should be treated as a separate genus. An important morphological feature that separates Trevia from Mallotus is that the anthers of the former have no connective separating the anther thecae. Further the ovary and fruits of Mallotus are muricate or often echinate whereas the fruits of Trevia are smooth. Therefore we will stick to our treatment as given in Fl. India 23: 168. 2012.

Today we chanced upon this tree in SGNP (Borivali National Park), Mumbai, about 30 ft tall, near water body, flowering profusely………is this Trewia nudiflora (Petari) with female flowers? (1753) has priority over Mallotus Lour. (1790). Kulju & Welzen (Taxon 57: 1358. 2008), has made a formal proposal for conservation of the generic name Mallotus against Trevia and it is still pending a decision.
The original spelling used by Linnaeus (Sp. Pl. ed. 1, 2: 1193. 1753) is ‘Trevia’,but later he inconsistently used both ‘Trevia’ and‘Trewia’. All subsequent authors have adopted the spelling ‘Trewia’. However, Art. 13.4 of the present Code (2006) gives protection to the original spelling given in Species Plantarum, ed. 1 (1753) and therefore ‘Trevia’cannot be altered.
I am at loss to understand the situation clearly.
if “The generic name Trevia L. (1753) has priority over Mallotus Lour. (1790)” as you write
1. Priority will come into consideration only if all species are to be under one genus, which should be either Mallotus (if proposal for conserving name is accepted) or Trevia (as per present situation).
2. If some species are to be placed under Mallotus and some under Trevia, the question of priority does not arise.
I find Mallotus philippensis is still being used as correct name, and in that case question of priority does not arise.

Seen this small tree / Shrub (?) at CBD Belapur hills. Unfortunately i had not bothered to capture all the features. I had few photos to share. Looks like some Mallotus sp.. it is Trewia nodiflora —female flower Possibly Trevia nudiflora L. (not ‘Trewia nodiflora’), However, here the styles are 2, whereas in Trevia they are 3. Further, without seeing the leaves it is not possible to determine it. … is correct.

Thanks for helping me out in the id of this tree which seems to be still unresolved. can you tell us if the last image was from the same individual plant as the first two? I am not sure of it. The last was taken at least two months earlier. There were two trees adjacent to one another. It’s possible that you have a male and a female tree of Trewia nudiflora. The last photo would be the immature male flowers and the first ones would be immature fruits from the other tree. To me the leaves seem to match for that species.

Eager to know the ID. In efi I come across only one species of Trewia i.e. Mallotus nudiflorus (Syn: (≡) Trewia nudiflora L. (basionym)); It is Trevia nudiflora var. nudiflora, recently treated as Mallotus nudiflorus. I donot know. I think the leaves are very much different from what we see of T. nudiflora around nashik region. Would like to know the result In fact there are four varieties of the species occurring in India. I followed up on the tree. Found it fruiting yesterday. Please take a look to see if the variety can be made out from these images.

Kindly help me ID this tree. This was seen in Nandi hills, Bangalore on 12th Feb 2015. One ID suggested is Mallotus nudiflorus (Trewia nudiflora). By the look of the bark, it does not have the characteristic grey smooth bark seen in T. nudiflora. Hence i am having a doubt.
Please suggest and help. Available data on the characters of the bark in Euphorbiaceae is insufficient for species demarcations. Hence it is not possible to identify the species on this character. However, the other morphological features point to Trevia (not Trewia) nudiflora var. nudiflora, recently treated to be Mallotus nudiflorus. Monotypic, from India to China and Indonesia.
Note. Based on molecular studies, Kulju, Sierra & Welzen (Blumea 52: 124. 2007) merge this genus with Mallotus. The generic name Trevia L. (1753) has priority over Mallotus Lour. (1790). Kulju & Welzen (Taxon 57: 1358. 2008), has made a formal proposal for conservation of the generic name Mallotus against Trevia and it is still pending a decision.
The original spelling used by Linnaeus (Sp. Pl. ed. 1, 2: 1193. 1753) is ‘Trevia’, but later he inconsistently used both ‘Trevia’ and ‘Trewia’. All subsequent authors have adopted the spelling ‘Trewia’. However, Art. 13.4 of the present Code (2006) gives protection to the original spelling given in Species Plantarum, ed. 1 (1753) and therefore ‘Trevia’ cannot be altered.

Shots taken alongside Hoogly river on 10/3/08 except for the leafless tree of 30/1/08. I have seen lot of trees in Jayanti, Duars, West Bengal along the river. See the details at Nationaal herbarium. There is not much inf. on net about this tree. Trewia is a plant genus of the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae), comprising 2 species. It is found from the Himalaya to Hainan Island. These species have hard large fruits.
Trewia species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including the leaf-miner Bucculatrix verax, which feeds exclusively on Trewia nudiflora.
The hard green fruit of Trewia nudiflora, which fall to the ground in large numbers during the monsoon season, are a preferred food of the Indian rhinoceros. The passage of its seeds through the rhino gut enhances its germination rate.

Even though the flowers in T.nudiflora are dioecious, the leaves of your tree appear different to me. … is still not satisfied with the Id of this plant as Trewia nudiflora, particularly the leaves. May I know in which part of Vasai was this observed? I too agree with … for ID I am not a ‘ वसईकर’ 😃 so don’t know about the exact location. But i will try to find out. Yes ! . identification help 4: 4 high res. images. Check for Bixa species (B.orellana ??? ) It looks like Mallotus nudiflorus (L.) Kulju & Welzen [Euphorbiaceae]. The characteristic flaky, mottled bark is quite indicative in one of the photographs. Leaves very well resemble those of Bixa species. Hence, it is better to wait till the tree bears flowers and fruits to decide the ID. Any ID suggested at this juncture are only tentative. Need to wait till it flowers. Being acquainted with both the trees myself, I feel that the nature of the bark is reason enough to rule out Bixa. As for the leaves, notwithstanding a superficial resemblance, there are finer details to consider. For instance, in the leaf of Bixa, there is a distinct bulge at the apex of the petiole (where it joins the leaf blade); the leaf samples posted by Vidya ji are different. Descriptions of Bixa do lay emphasis on the “thickened” petiole. . Looking for help with identification: 2 images- 1 high res.
