milletia peguensis: I am posting some images of milletia peguensis which i had taken last year in chandigarh around this time. It is a popular tree in some of the northern sectors

– have a very interesting story about this tree. i did my PhD from Panjab University, Chandigarh. Behind the Botany Department there is a long double row (about 500 meters) of these fully grown trees. as the trees are planted closely they form a very shady tract amongst them. so you can find some ‘love birds’  sitting in the shades to catch some private moments. so one of my very senior (he was a research associate at that time) named the plant as “COUPLE PLANT” and he would often use this name to describe the location and the tree with so serious of expressions that a new student would take it to be correct but then he would utter out the explanation and……

Possibly from Banglore. …, pl. confirm it along with whether the palant is ornamental or wild.

It looks like either Milletia ovalifolia or Lonchocarpus serecea. A photo of the entire tree may be useful in identification.

Good representative images.

Millettia peguensis syn Milletia ovalifolia

The fruit does not match those of Lonchocarpus sericeus. And the corolla is inconsistent with that of Pongamia ovalifolia. Fruit of this tree is also much longer than that of Pongamia ovalifolia. Is this positively Pongamia ovalifolia?
Tree looks like an ornamental. Found in the Bangalore University campus, Bangalore.

‘Fruit of this tree is also much longer than that of Pongamia ovalifolia’
Agree.
Need to consider alternatives.

Millettia species so far in efi.

Millettia peguensis Ali only as per images herein.

Tree seen in a cultivated garden in the first week of March.
Mostly, all tender leaves with a few pods.

not gliricidia

Thanks for your views. Will need to check further.

gliricidia has these long branches, often called  “waterspout” configuration and i have not seen any red young leaves on them. we have many of these planted by the highway department in south 24 paraganas and villagers are fond of using their branches as planting for living hedge

Also check/species/a—l/f/fabaceae/millettia/millettia-peguensis

You’re right ma’am, but now accepted is Pongamia pinnata,

But as suggested by …, this looks more like Millettia peguensis (Pongamia ovalifolia) as the flowers are conspicuously pink with longish

Looks more like Millettia peguensis, the Moulmein rosewood.

Also check my earlier posting on this species

Thanks … You are right. I was sure about Pongamia genus but the flowers were pinkish compared to P.pinnata, so was rather confused.

Ok, ma’am, final judgement is yours, because you have plant to observe if is there any doubt,
