The green fruits are now scarlet red to orangeish red and a great favorite of birds… and sometimes children… I have tasted them…pulp is sweet-flat-granular, remotely reminds me of white Sapota – or shabeda in local Bengali lingo… ;

But I could not recognize it in fruiting condition. ‘Moulshri‘ is another name for this plant. Mimusops elengi, Sapotaceae. There is a very good plantation on road side in Dr. Harisingh Gour Central University campus. The tree provide very good and cool shade in the summer. Yes, Mimusops elengi…. In our informal survey…no bakul tree had been uprooted during Hurricane Aila in calcutta … in the memorial grounds, lakes and its vicinity and my neighbourhood in Southern calcutta…. Its fruits are eaten by many birds, its flowers are fragrant and nectar food for butterflies and bees and its wood when ready takes on beautiful polish, I am told is somewhat reddish…. Its a value added street tree for urban forestry, gives dense shade , being useful for wild life, is fragrant and is useful medicinally…. in Ayurvedic formulations..
I love this tree among many… In one gujarati Kathiawari dialect its call Bor-salli, some others call it Bol-rasi…. go figure…

This is the time for BAKUL. This flower is known as MAULSARI in hindi and the scientific name is Mimusops elengi. This year I have recorded six species of butterflies on this flower. This is BAKUL GAACHH in Bengali, very romantically associated with Bengali novels in older days where protagonists offered these flowers or garland to their fiancee and vice versa ! …, have you ever heard of that our mother or grannies called their bosom friends as BAKUL. They even pledged that in future, when they would have children they would surely be in laws with each other!

Flora of Delhi: Mimusops elengi from IIPA Campus New Delhi: something is puzzling me about this plant… there are a lot of mimusops in Chandigarh… while some are almost every year laden with fruits some i have never seen bearing any fruits though they are mature enough to bear fruits…. is there anything i dont know about this plant which can help me solve this….??? Mimusops elengi (Family: Sapotaceae). Mazhilam poo in Tamil and ranjal in kannada. The flowers are collected and made into garlands in Chennai and offered to God.. Sold outside the Shiva temples. Fruits edible. . Bakkal flower: I found it only on two pages in google as truly a flower… otherwise its someones ‘ name etc I imagined that it could be a marathi name since Saibaba lived in Shirdi. Then I also thought the spelling could be slightly different. Then I searched in flowers names in Marathi and got it as Bakul thorough Google. Then it was easy.

Valmiki mentioned BAKULA tree in his Ramayan. In Hindi this tree is known as Maulsari and it is known as Bakul in Bangla. Scientifically it is known as Mimusops elengi. Small flowers are fragrent. Fruits are edible.

The sepals on fruits seem very different from the regular ones. The fruits measure just about 3/4th inch. Please help ID This looks close to Putranjiva roxburghii to me. I hope I have replied on the correct link this time. …, I doubt this tree to be any species of Putranjiva, which typically has pendulous branches.
And I could very well be mistaking it to be Lagerstroemia.

Many thanks to … too for her keen observation that the plant is not Lagerstroemia. … is correct. looks like a very prolific producer of fertilized non-dropping off of flowers. so there are these unusually large numbers of fruits. we we generally dont see it so often. did you look at the soil below the tree, even the dried flowers can be seen. did you?
