VOF Week: Morina longifolia at VOF & Auli Top:
Sharing few photographs of Morina longifolia (Family: Dipsacaceae) from VOF and Auli Top.

The Morina seems to have a unique colour of the flowers when in full bloom. All the posts from different members are in various stages of bloom. The colour is simply gorgeous. Loved the background in the last photograph.

Morina longifolia … en-route Dhel Pass- GHNP- PKA37 :  7 posts by 5 authors. Attachments (6).
Morina longifolia (Family: Caprifoliaceae ) seen en-route Dhel Pass at GHNP at an altitude of approx. 3600m.

I am very happy to see these in their NATURAL ORIGINAL HABITAT
Apparently seeds of all the Morina longifolia we see in the west came from this Himalayan home of most of the morinas…
its seen in most of the catalogs of home gardens flowering plants in UK and USA…

This one is recommended for its tall spikes of beautiful flowers and citrusy scent of leaves.
I love this plant and your case study in details especially the last picture which I could zoom into to look at the leaves’ features.
Thanks … hiking at nearly 10,000 feet above sea level is a test of endurance, so taking such detailed pictures are really appreciated.

Beautiful pics … you caught this at most appropriate time and place..

Beautiful spinescent species indicative of grazing pressure. It too have long flowering season lasting to October first half while leaves remain green till snow cover arrives in the late autumn.

Morina longifolia from Gunji (Altitude 10500 feet) for validation. Photo taken on Aug 28, 2016.

Yes, this comes within Morina longifolia found on open slopes and alpine shrubberies @ 3000-4000m from Kashmir to Bhutan. From Uttaranachal eastwards one must consider what was Morina polyphylla but this is readily distinguished and according to ‘Himalayan Plants Illustrated’ is now within the genus Cryptothladia but have not checked this further. And in Nepal one must consider what was Morina nepalensis but according to ‘Himalayan Plants Illustrated’ is now within Acanthocalyx – but have not checked this further. This is also readily distinguished by drooping flowers and leaves without marginal bristles.
M.longifolia often has whitish to pale pink flowers initially which often fade to a darker pink. In case you are uncertain about its identity, squeeze a leave between your fingers and you will detect a pleasant, tangy odour – taking care to avoid the spines!

Yesterday I trekked up to Snowline (3300m approx.) and found this plant growing on slopes at about 3100m. All the plants were inaccessible and despite looking around for some time I could not find one that was near to have a proper look. I made several photographs and in the end managed to bend one plant lower with the curved handle of my friend’s umbrella. The result follows. I think this is Morina longifolia. Please correct me if I am wrong.
