The leaves of this climber is used as vegetable and considered good for stomach ailment in NE India.

Raw or boiled leaves are eaten by the local communities of Arunachal Pradesh (and probably in Assam too) to get rid of the stomach pain. I remember eating ‘Bhajji/Pakora’ made up of the leaves, offered by one of my Assamese neighbors when I was in Arunachal. They used to call it Paderu patta (पदेडू पत्ता = Leaf with farty smell :-)).

yes common in bengal… called gandha-bhadulia…
used for rejuvenation, made up in a multi med concoction/ brew….kwatha… even Chakradatta described it way back when
…never seen the flowers, and … the buds look like modern day large med capsules… spectacular…

As you can see the bengali name is “gandha” may be referring to smell and so does “foetida” mean, “foul smell”.

sharing my flora picture of 2012 as i am not able to spent time to interact in the discussion. I am also not able to share my picture due to my packed assignment. I am busy in writing my book on Flora of Odihsa and also busy in field work.
I am sharing my Flora picture of the Year, 2012. Since last 3 years i was searching to get a view of how Paederia foetida looks when in full bloom. I have visited so many local and regional hot spots of Biodiversity in Odisha during my documentation of Flora of Odisha. But could not find this plant flowering. Even if i encountered good population of this species, all were in vegetative stage. I came to know that this species is listed under RET by FRLHT and flowering is not common. Finally last year i spotted this species flowering near to my office at Sahid nagar, Bhubaneswar in wild condition. I was very very happy and took around 50 snaps.

Excellent picture. I have seen this plant in Hong Kong on the roadsides. I used to mistake it for Asclepiads because of the oppose leaves. But finally I learnt how to differentiate it. Just touch the leaf and smell your hands, it gives a bad smell, probably that is why the species epithet “foetida“ . I have never seen the flower and it is very nice to see the beautiful flowers of this plant.

Yes ma’m… but the crushed leaves smell bad. Popularly known as ‘Paderu patta’ (पदेरू-पत्ता) or ‘Paadu patta’ (पादू-पत्ता). 🙂

Probably the leaves have medicinal properties. Have seen locals eating as ‘Bhajji’ or ‘Pakauda’ if the stomach is upset.
