There is another sp. Paspalum vaginatum, which is often mistaken as P.distichum. It has shorter and stiff racemes with larger ovate spikelets than the actual P.distichum.

grass Paspalum sp.? from Hooghly 16/8/12 SK2:
Attaching images of a grass, found on roadside, yesterday. Grasses are so enigmatic, even after … discussed it so beautifully in my earlier post (https://groups.google.com/indiantreepix/h1ytg/discussion) i am not sure if this could be another Paspalum sp.

Species : Paspalum distichum Linn. ?
Habit & Habitat : grass on roadside
  • height : about 1 foot or less
  • leaves : upper – 3 cm x 0.5 cm; lower at base – 6cm x 0.7 cm
  • racemes 2, about 6 cm each, “V” shaped
Date : 15/8/12, 9.32 A.M.
Place : Garalgacha (Hooghly)

Your are right. This is the actual Paspalum distichum also called Paspalum paspalodes.
There is another sp. Paspalum vaginatum, which is often mistaken as P.distichum. It has shorter and stiff racemes with larger ovate spikelets than the actual P.distichum.

I will see if i can also find Paspalum vaginatum in our locality.

Paspalum distichum from Kashmir, usually growing in wet places and weed in rice fields, photographed from Hazuribagh Garden in Srinagar on June 16, 2010.
Common Names:
English: Couch paspalum, Eternity grass, Ginger grass, Joint grass, Knotgrass, Thompson grass, Water couch, Water finger-grass

Perhaps better be named as Paspalum paspalodes (Michx.) Scribner in Mem. Torrey Bot. Club. 5:29. 1894. (syn: P. distichum auct. (non L.)

Common in moist places in Kashmir, often on borders of fields and drains. Photographed from Kashmir in June, 2010
For interesting information on nomenclature see:
http://efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=5&taxon_id=242336176

Thanks, … But GRIn states Paspalum paspalodes (Michx.) Scribn. to be Synonym of Paspalum distichum L. as also The Plant List.
Pl. clarify.

You are right … We take it as P. disticum and ignore Flora of Pakistan.
