While going through D V Cowen’s Flowering Trees and Shrubs of India, I came across an interesting piece of information on the common name of Plumeria rubra. This plant is known as FRANGIPANI. This is what Mrs Cowen says about the name,
“Frangipani is undoubtedly the commonest name for all these trees, being associated with the very distinctive perfume. Four centuries before the discovery of the Western Hemisphere and of the trees growing therean Italian nobleman, by combining a number of volatile oils, produced a heady perfume which became, and remained a favourite with the noble ladies of Europe. This easily recognisable scent was at once recalled by the early settlers in the Caribbean when they found trees with the same fragrance. So they called them FRANGIPANI, the name of the Italian nobleman.”

I just vaguely remember someone telling me the the meaning of “Frangipani” as “frozen milk” ( may be indicating the latex). Can anyone throw the light ?

A very small plant with hardly any leaves.

Plumerias are identified from leaf apex. This is P. rubra and should have had acuminate leaves

Thanks for a possible id. On searching, I am unable to find Plumeria with that name although there are a few other flowers. Experts kindly help.

Almost 16 year back … from Kasturirangan’s Nursery supplied a similar grown up Plumeria plant named as P.”Donel Smithii” to be planted in Kerala.
