this plant has been bothering me for ID for a long time. Rhinacanthus is a taller shrub, the upper lip is deltoid and acute. Here the upper lip is linear notched and recurved. I have IDd this as Hypoestis lanata. Could you pls validate.

I referred Cooke’s flora to know more about these plants.
The following points of him for Rhinacanthus nasutus are matching with the plant posted here. (Cooke’s descriptions for Hypoestes lanata are given in parenthesis, in red font):
1. Corolla white, no mention about purple spots on lip (corolla pale purple, lower lip spotted with dark purple at the base)
2. Upper lip linear-oblong, twisted or recurved (upper lip is understandably erect…as there is no mention about this)
3. Upper lip much shorter than the lower (upper lip more or less equal to the lower)
4. Upper lip 9.5 mm long; 2 mm broad at base and 1.3 mm broad at top (upper lip 15.8 mm by 3.2 mm, so it is much longer and broader here, in Hypoestes)
5. Widely distributed & common (Rare, found in Konkan only?)
I also learn that the anthers are 2-celled in Rhinacanthus, and are 1-celled in Hypoestes. May be this feature will help to fix the id unambiguously. And the bracts said to be larger than calyx segments in Hypoestes, which is not the case in the posted picture (clearly seen in pic # DSC_1483e). The plant posted here by .. looks entirely different from either of the pictures in the link:
efi thread
Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thank you …. The key character of anther cells can not be seen from pictures but I will look for that since I know both plants distinctly. Rhinacanthus occurs in semi-evergreen habitats and the other occurs in rocky dry hills. Pls look at the pictures posted in a seperate post. Many pictures on net show a lot of confusion between these 2 plants. So far I did not feel the need for a microscopic study but I will now carry it when feasible.

Acanthaceae Week : 6152011 ud 01 Rhinacantha nastus:
Attaching pictures of Rhinacantha nastus, Acanthaceae family.

I was attracted to unusual orchid like flowers.
Date January 2008
Southern fringes of Kolkata in A herbal garden, supervised by a junior botanist….
This herb is a shrub, less than 3 feet tall,  not woody stem….
2 Pictures showing Flowers, leaves, and  insertion pattern of leaves and flowers.
No seed pods or fruits were present then….
no insects hovering around, either….
In Ayurveda and local lore usage,  roots and leaves are used for treatment of Krimi and cutaneous inflammations and reactionary changes.

There’s typo in the subject line and attachment(s) names…. nasuto should read nasutus. AND WHILE I AM HERE I would like to add that the Bengali name for Rhinocanthus nasutus Is PALAK  JUI  পলক ঝুঁই

Please don’t use weed to denote plants which are not weeds.
Please go through the link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weed

Pls give size of the whole plant, size and type of inflorescence and the season. This can be Rhinacanthus communis, way different from the one posted in Acanthaceae week. I have IDd the one labelled as R.

to be Hypoestis lanata. Pls validate

Sorry, I meant to say R. nasutus (not R. communis),

Here are some details of the plant  & sending a better resolution of the same photo  to your email.

Photo date: 05 Feb 2011, Singhagad
Height 2-5 feet approx.
Flower – small, 2-3 cms, Leaves- 25cms
Inflorescence- I’m afraid, need to undergo a crash course to describe the finer details http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inflorescence
Thanks for the mention –Hygrophila auriculata as a non weed. Infact, was little bit hesitant to describe the plant as a weed. Apologies for my ignorance, This link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weed is educative. Highlighst the benefit,  appreciate and even defend weeds -“let them be left; wildness and wet; Long live the weeds and the wilderness yet.”

I too think that this is Rhinacanthus nasutus (Acanthaceae)

Would like Common & Botanical ID of this plant. Pics taken on 08-01-12

Very nice find … and beautiful pictures including the profile of the plant.
I have not seen this plant so far but this appears to be Gymnostachyum glabrum
Leaves are not toothed here though.
Family : Acanthaceae
We have to wait for other opinions.

Or could this be Rhinacanthus nasutus?? (Family: Acanthaceae).

I would go with … id, Rhinacanthus nasutus.
But there seems to be some confusion due to closely related species with similar floral morphology. Please check earlier discussions on this species.
…, if possible, could you please post a picture of Gymnostachyum glabrum for comparison?

Thank you for sharing but here the leaves are not visible.

Supplementing with an image of Rhinocanthus nasutus, with some leaves and also a link.
Flowers of India

Thank you …, Here we can see the leaves as well as subquadrangular branches.

interesting. because of the Shadow and light effect the front edge of the stem looks acute and not rounded in this new picture and number two in original set.
Unless … mentioned subquandrangular stem i would have guessed a real 90 degrees angle for the front top edge. so much for digital herbarium… that is a drawback because of light and shadow  interaction in field setting. hence a real herbarium specimen is still the norm.
And hence with digital herbarium the features of the plant … esp diagnostic features must be spelled out in any eflora
as indiatreepix (this group’s website) has done always and is continuing to do… kudos to all

Thanks … for your observation and feedback.
I agree that it is better to take pictures showing the distinctive morphological features of a specimen.
But most of the times the identity of the specimen would be doubtful or even unknown  while taking the pictures. only after we consult the web or the books it will be clear what exactly we have missed in the field. Many limitations while taking pictures that would clinch the ID beyond doubt…! Limited botanical knowledge as in my case…!!

Very true, … about pictures before and after consulting books or getting feedback on id is often needed.
but you know much much much more than myself for sure.
i was saying this about real herbarium because a few years (about 12 to 15 years) ago there was some hope at some big centers that after digitizing the entire population of herbarium sheets may be they can be relegated to some storage and that most researchers would only need to study the digital prints or photographs.
To my mind the live specimen, digital or other wise photography,  dissection and further photography (chemical analysis and such) live herbarium and digital photo based herbarium and digitzed herbarium sheets all make a continuous whole along with the key characteristics written out by knowledgeable people. One set compliments the other.
The same reason why we still have medical museums and repositories of tissues from all possible pathologies, even though digital photography abounds in medical field too.

this may be R.nasutus. i am just confused especially regards the upper lip. some match others don’t, besides the deep red in the flowers absent in others.
I will go with the id till disputed. I shall have one more look this year if possible.

Please, while I do see the 3 prominent petals on the flower, the arrangement of the blooms does not match the Rhinacnthus nasutus. There would be a spur on the R. nasutus and I cannot see it in the image offered. Can we please look further? Wikipedia image

Thanks, …, Spur is there, which you can clearly see in some of the flowers. Also check more detailed images at Rhinacanthus nasutus (L.) Kurz

This herb found prostrate, growing among dry scrub vegetation on a gentle-sloped hillock, perhaps a climber. Could not locate leaves. The flower about 15 mm across.
at Sutagatti, Karnataka on April 22, 2011

The flower reminds me of Rhinacanthus nasutus.
Kindly check for it.
I have seen in MNP.

I too have similar thoughts …; but during this trip I was with …- and he does not think this plant to be Rhinacanthus nasutus. Hopefully we get some other thoughts; let us wait. Thank you very much.

The inflorescence is not monochasial as apparently appears in the first pic which may lead to thinking of some novel species. A close look in the highest resolution of the other two pictures reveals the inflo may be a panicle or a thyrse.
Pseuderanthemum species can have same flower form CVH. In fact FoC thinks Pseuderanthemum polyanthum (C. B. Clarke ex Oliver) can be misidentified with Rhinacanthus calcaratus (Wall.)Nees. At least two more Pseuderanthemum distributed in India can have flowers with similar form.
But, here the upper leaves are seemingly sessile and pubescent and significantly smaller than those Pseuderanthemum above.
Rhinacanthus communis Nees of FBI (can’t help…) is cultivated as well as wild in Deccan peninsula. In spite of Shrikant Ji’s view please check what is the habit of wild form. Because it has several synonyms in FBI, one of which is Justicia scandens Vahl and also other. One African species have upper leaves sessile.
Leaf size, whatever little can be found in your pics, and calyx lobes suggest it can be Rhinacanthus.

Thanks … I have no idea about this plant – my initial thought was it could be Rhinacanthus nasutus. Not sure anymore.

I am/was also so much hesitant, …
The inflorescence is very special and there are so many JusticiaRostellularia etc.

Yes …, I am convinced. Thank you very much !!! Revising my flickr notes accordingly.
I had raised this query because the plant was found in a dried up habitat, and the plant had no leaves !!

The photograph from Kerala it has not taken from healthy plant and photo taken at evening time and other members from other places taken photos at day time. So plant condition may lead development of flowers so healthy plant develope flowers of proper size and shape but the photograph of plant taken is seems to be a weak and diseased plant. So variation in flower may be there. So I suggest to select healthy plant take photos at different time intervals and the check the characters of plant.
