Rhinacanthus is a taller shrub, the upper lip is deltoid and acute. Here the upper lip is linear notched and recurved. I have IDd this as Hypoestis lanata. Could you pls validate. I referred Cooke’s flora to know more about these plants. Thank you …. The key character of anther cells can not be seen from pictures but I will look for that since I know both plants distinctly. Rhinacanthus occurs in semi-evergreen habitats and the other occurs in rocky dry hills. Pls look at the pictures posted in a seperate post. Many pictures on net show a lot of confusion between these 2 plants. So far I did not feel the need for a microscopic study but I will now carry it when feasible.

This can be Rhinacanthus communis, way different from the one posted in Acanthaceae week. I have IDd the one labelled as R. Flowers of India Thank you …, Here we can see the leaves as well as subquadrangular branches. interesting. because of the Shadow and light effect the front edge of the stem looks acute and not rounded in this new picture and number two in original set. but you know much much much more than myself for sure. i was saying this about real herbarium because a few years (about 12 to 15 years) ago there was some hope at some big centers that after digitizing the entire population of herbarium sheets may be they can be relegated to some storage and that most researchers would only need to study the digital prints or photographs. To my mind the live specimen, digital or other wise photography, dissection and further photography (chemical analysis and such) live herbarium and digital photo based herbarium and digitzed herbarium sheets all make a continuous whole along with the key characteristics written out by knowledgeable people. One set compliments the other. The same reason why we still have medical museums and repositories of tissues from all possible pathologies, even though digital photography abounds in medical field too.
Not too sure of this identity but looks like it. Your opinion please.

To me also appear close to images at Rhinacanthus nasutus (L.) Kurz Yes I think this is correct. Thanks … Not too sure now. this may be R.nasutus. i am just confused especially regards the upper lip. some match others don’t, besides the deep red in the flowers absent in others.

Appears close to images at Rhinacanthus nasutus (L.) Kurz Please, while I do see the 3 prominent petals on the flower, the arrangement of the blooms does not match the Rhinacnthus nasutus. There would be a spur on the R. nasutus and I cannot see it in the image offered. Can we please look further? Wikipedia image

This herb found prostrate, growing among dry scrub vegetation on a gentle-sloped hillock, perhaps a climber. Could not locate leaves. The flower about 15 mm across.

I have seen in MNP. I too have similar thoughts …; but during this trip I was with …- and he does not think this plant to be Rhinacanthus nasutus. Hopefully we get some other thoughts; let us wait. Thank you very much. The inflorescence is not monochasial as apparently appears in the first pic which may lead to thinking of some novel species. A close look in the highest resolution of the other two pictures reveals the inflo may be a panicle or a thyrse. Thanks … I have no idea about this plant – my initial thought was it could be Rhinacanthus nasutus. Not sure anymore. I am/was also so much hesitant, … Yes …, I am convinced. Thank you very much !!! I had raised this query because the plant was found in a dried up habitat, and the plant had no leaves !!

Came across this prostrate herb/ climber on a small hillock near Sutagatti, Karnataka (on the way to Belgaum).

The photograph from Kerala it has not taken from healthy plant and photo taken at evening time and other members from other places taken photos at day time. So plant condition may lead development of flowers so healthy plant develope flowers of proper size and shape but the photograph of plant taken is seems to be a weak and diseased plant. So variation in flower may be there. So I suggest to select healthy plant take photos at different time intervals and the check the characters of plant.
