Habitat: sloping meadow
Habit: herb about 1 m high; flower about 1 – 1.5 inch across.
… apologies, this is the only photo.

This not Saussurea costus, it seemms to me Saussurea hypoleuca.

Yes … is right. This is Saussurea auriculata (DC.) Sch.- Bip. an accepted name while S. hypoleuca is a synonym.

Thank you very much … for this ID.
Was confident with my ID for upload at efi thread … hopefully that is correct too, which shows the flower to grow with an extraordinarily long stock.

A plant for ID ABAUG2017/18 : 6 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (4)

I photographed this plant on my previous hike near Snowline. It was growing next to a large cluster of Rhododendron campanulatum. I might go again tomorrow to see if there is any further development. Please help identify it.

…, as usual was right in advising to check for a Saussurea species. After his advice, I checked and found that my plant was likely to be Saussurea auriculata and I went up to the mountains where I had found it to see the mature inflorescence. Finding the nodding dark purple flower heads confirmed the initial ID. Please advise.
