Seeking Taxonomical Name : 5 posts by 3 authors.

A message from a friend based in Mhow, District Indore, Madhya Pradesh
“Do you know the botanical name for puwaadiya, a weed here.
But I learn that it is a veggie used by bhils and the seeds make a great substitute for coffee.
Wanted to know more about it.”

I think the plant in question is Senna tora (L.) Roxb. [syn. Cassia tora L.]. Family: Leguminosae. One of the Gujarati names of this plant – પુવાડિયો – is also similar to the one you have mentioned.

I think you’ve got it. Will inform my friend. An image check will give the confirmation.

… is correct sounds like its Cassia tora in Gujarat and Kutchh

variously known as Puwadiyo, Kumvadiyoa in Gujarat and Saurashtra and in Kutchh as Pumwar etc.
What I  also would appreciate iis :
A: pictures and more importantly:
B: how do they use it, when and what age
do men and women both use it?

Many thanks …, Have asked my friend, an organic farmer, to send pictures and how the Bhil tribals use this plant. At what age, genderwise. Will keep the group posted.
He did mention when I sent him … reply that the Bhils call it Puwadiyo and that he had wrongly called it Puwadiya.

Often confused with S. obtusifolia more so in west (so don’t believe most online images), but can be differentiated somewhat narrowed apex, glands between lower two pairs of leaflets, staminodes often absent (only 7 stamens seen), shorter pedicel (up to 10 mm in flower, 15 mm in fruit), densely hairy ovary.
Here are complete differences:
Senna tora: 30-120 cm tall; stipules 8-15 mm long, often falcate; leaflets 0.5-5 cm long and 0.5-2.5 cm wide, base oblique, apex delicately acute, glands between 2 lower pairs of leaflets; petiolules 1-2 mm long;bracts 2-4 mm long, pedicel 4-10 mm long, up to 1.5 cm in fruit, hairy; . Sepals ovate, 5-6 mm long. Petals 8-10 mm long; 3 upper stamens absent or staminodial; Ovary appressed, densely hairy; pod glabrescent; areoles on both sides of the seed, 1.5-2 mm wide, often almost as wide as the seed

Senna obtusifolia: 0.5-2 m tall; sti¬pule 5-10 mm long; leaflets 3 pairs, 1.5-6 cm long, 1.2-3 cm wide, base slightly oblique, rounded at the top, apex minutely acute; gland present between lowest pair of leaflets; , petiolules 2.5 mm long; Bracts 4-8 mm long, pedicel 1.2-3.5 cm long, in fruit up to 4.5 cm long, hairy; petals 12-15 mm long; 3 upper stamens staminodial. Ovary more or less glabrous; pods glabrous to subglabrous; areoles on both sides of the seed, narrow linear, .3-.5 mm wide.

Thanks, …, for bringing out the differences.

Difficult to ID with this image but looks like Senna tora (L.) Roxb. !

Yes it is Senna toraonly, Panwar, roadside, open land colonizer. It is used in human and veterinary medicine, dried leaves are sold in the raw material market, seeds also sold in the raw material market in ton volumes. It is useful in skin infections and liver tonic. Often collectors misidentified Cassia uniflora as Cassia tora, the former has 5 pairs of leaflets
