A small shrub with divaricate branches. Leaves15-22 x 5-10 cm, shortly-petioled, opposite, elliptic-oblong or ovate, glabrous or pubescent, lateral nerves prominent beneath, base acute. Flowers sessile or shortly-pedicelled, bluish-purple, sweet-scented, club-shaped in bud, arranged in large, terminal, lax, trichotomous panicles. Sepals 4-5, persistent. Petals valvate, fused, corolla-tube trumpet-shaped. Capsule ellipsoid, small, 5-seeded.

Leaves on being rubbed emit very foul smell, hence known as padari in lower parts of Himachal Pradesh.

The bad smell is perhaps for self defense against insect attack? does anybody here know? have references?

I read a summary of someone’s phd thesis that I cant track down
