Could this be Trichosanthes cucumerina L. as in – efi thread?

IDENTIFICATION OF WHITE STAR-LIKE FLOWER: Could your group of experts please help identify and describe this white star-like wild flower photographed near the river ghaghar outside chandigarh.
I am writing about these flowers in the newspaper and would require the group’s expertise.

Its Trichosanthes cucumerina var. anguina… commonly know as snake gourd

Thanks, … Is it called the `tori’ or the `ghiya’ in Hindi? Or is it something else? Does the flower bloom only during the night?

It’s not ghea or tori….its called chichida in northern India…….yes it’s probably blooming in night only since mostly white flower bloom in night as per pollination concept …..

Could the group pl help me understand the pollination process of the flower of the snake gourd and why it blossoms at night?

My thanks to the group and to … for id the flower of the chichinda. It was published in my Sunday column, wildbuzz, in the Hindustan Times, Chandigarh. I am attaching the scan and the text for ready reference.
Stars in a Dhakoli night

* The humdrum snake gourd known as `chichinda’ in the local vegetable market is, unbelievably, the offspring of flowers unrivalled in loveliness. Star-like, milky-white, frilly and mystically blossoming mostly at night. Photographer … stumbled upon these growing wild one early morning while pursuing a female Great eggfly butterfly. The fluttering angel eluded him, floating from one flower to another at a green belt near the river Ghaghar in Dhakoli, Zirakpur, finally leading him to exotic flowers. … couldn’t identify the flowers but struck by the sheer originality of these blossoms, he soon forgot the butterfly. Identified later by … of the renowned group of botanists, efloraofindia, `chichinda’ flowers are pollinated by insects and spring lace-like from buds before emerging as stars. The `chichinda’ vegetable has applications in native medicines.

does the fruit get any larger/longer?

Thanks … and … for the appreciation. Usha di, all the the fruits I saw there was only this length. I think this is the smaller variety.

This is the Common Fringed-flower Vine [Trichosanthes cucumerina]. The fruit do not get any larger than this. Some of my photographs [there should be many more] are available at this link

Thanks … for the ID. Is it the relative of the padval ?

The locals at Shahapur call this Tondli. Not sure where I got it from, but in the link have referred to it as Jungli Padvel :
Have not been able to locate my photographs of it fruiting in the archives of this group, hence am send a few of my photographs now.

Date / Time: 20 SEP 13 at 02:20 PM … Altitude: about 1922 ft asl
¿Cucumis ? … (family: Cucurbitaceae)
Dear friends, the cucurbits confuse me. Here the photos too do not provide much clue to all aspects. Would be glad to know ID to genus level.
Bhimbetka Rock Shelters, a world heritage site, is famous for its rock paintings. The place is known to be one of the most primitive dwellings of human race. All of the rock shelters are located within the territory of Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary.

Unless there is some mix up the fruits suggest Trichosanthes cucumerina var. cucumerina

Many many thanks …; I am convinced with Trichosanthes cucumerina var. cucumerinaYes, there is a mix of plants.

I take this opportunity of recent uploads of various cucurbits. I have an earlier post though. These photographs were recorded a little while ago as I noted the bulging areas (something to do with meristem?) at the tip of this climber

Very good and illustrative photographs

Trichosantrhes pilosa Lour. or something else?

There are three different species of Trichosanthes pilosa as per Catalogue of Life.
Trichosanthes pilosa Lour. is not reported in Checklist of Nepal
From other two, Trichosanthes tricuspidata Lour. fruit look round as per images and details herein. Fruit look similar to Trichosanthes cucumerina var. cucumerina, but seeds look different as per FOC illustration.

Trichosanthes pilosa
I guess fruit (except for base) and seed description matching !

Yes, … Flora of China illustrates T.pilosa (syn. T.ovigera Blume- which is mentioned in the Checklist of Nepal). Fruit matches with GBIF– specimen.
POWO and CoL, treat it (T.ovigera Blume) as an independent species, with distribution in Nepal.

I guess it is more close to Trichosanthes cucumerina L.

Yes, in the absence of leaves, I also think this is a better option.
