Photographed this Pea flowers at “Turtuk:” Village, Ladakh. Bot. name: Pisum sativum Family: Fabaceae A different variety it seems. Different shade of purple… Pisum sativum var. macrocarpon from PUSA, Delhi-GSNOV04/04 : 4 posts by 2 authors. Attachments (3)
Pisum sativum var. macrocarpon with sometimes red flowers, larger flat edible pods and sweeter seeds. Known as Sweet pea or Snap pea. very nice. are all sweet pea flowers of this color? i seem to remember lighter pink from my balcony plants of sweet peas Please read as Sugar pea instead of Sweet pea (which usually refers to Lathyrus odoratus). yes my mistake too, … I have grown these and eaten them for many years
BUT if the pod is flat its SNOW PEAS, the seeds are minute and not full bodied round as in the regular peas nor like the sugar snap. these flat peas are available widely in groceries esp with high end and chinese groceries, used to saute them in vegetables. Snow peas are different, called The snow pea (Pisum sativum var. saccharatum) per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_pea
SUGAR SNAP PEAS are like regular peas, except they are inordinately sweet and the whole pod can be eaten, even raw… a favorite of mine.
Sugar Snap peas came in vogue in about 1975 and have stayed in fashion even now for home gardeners and for specialty growers. | then they are available locally. Wikipedia says its : Snap peas (Pisum sativum var. macrocarpon), also known as sugar snap peas, are a cultivar group of edible-podded peas “end quote
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snap_pea And when we went to buy the seeds for the sugar snap peas there were already several varieties available…
and they are stringless i.e. less fibrous, so can be eaten whole
one paper that talks of the strigyness: http://journal.ashspublications.org/content/117/4/628.full.pdf

and the L. odoratus we grew sometimes for the cut flowers in the homes and the faint scent that wafted from time to time in first few hours of bringing them in was indeed sweet… sweet pea of the english gardens and english home hot houses with “stoves” of last century. ps so which of these peas is it? sugar snap peas with rounded seeds or the flat small attenuated peas called Snow peas I am asking because your description says flat … I thought somebody will share the picture of leaflet tendril. Unfortunately I also don’t have any pictures.

Widely liked Fabaceae member.
This plant shows interesting botanical characters like foliaceous stipules and the terminal leaflets getting modified into tendril. Gregor Mendel used this plant for observations which led to the principles of Mendelian genetics, the foundation of modern genetics.
