This could be Torana large climber. Some of my photographs of this are available at this link

Thanks again … I got confused because this one is more like a shrub but maybe it will grow into a climber.

Requesting to please ID this medium sized tree captured at SGNP, Mumbai in September 2013.

I think, the local guide mentioned ‘Toran’.

This is a species of Zizyphus poosibly Toran [Z. rugosa] a large climber.

My photographs of Toran are available at this link.

If you still feel it is a tree, then it could be Ghatbor [Z.caracutta], my photographs of which are available at this link.

Thanks … for the ID and the reference links.

I will take it as Z. rugosa (Toran) as I remember the local guide mentioning this and also now feel that it was a climber rather than a tree.

Request for ID : 270411 : AK-3: Again taken at Khandala, Maharashtra on the 24th of March, 2011. This was a small tree.

– What is the size of fruits? I think this could be a Zizipus sp.

– Around 1-2 cm….similar to that of an olive. Have photographed from a distance, so can’t say the exact size.

– Does look like ZIziphus from the spines (one curved upwards, other downwards) and leaves.

–  This could be Toran [Zizyphus rugosa]. Have recently posted photographs of this fruiting.

I’m not sure of which plant it is. The “patterns” however are caused by leaf miners. They are small insects which eat the leaf from inside leaving lines where chlorophyll is absent. They are considered quite a pest.

This is a species of Ziziyphus [with marks left on the leaves after the caterpillars of a species of Pierrot butterfly feed on them].

I think it should be Ziziphus rugosa as per images and details herein.

Date: Mid Dec 2018. Any tendril not found. Two spines, one of them is curved, at the base of petiole, like that of Ziziphus species.

Yes, looks something like Ziziphus

If leaves are arrange in alternate fashion and spines are successively one bend and one straight then its could be Ziziphus oenoplia.

I think close to images at Ziziphus rugosa

Thanks you so much … Yes it is matching with Ziziphus rugosa.

Characters matched as-
Plant in attached picture is armed woody straggler is matching (Ref Flora of Guntur District: Andhra Pradesh, India ).
As per ‘Jungle trees of Central India’, when it find nothing nearby to latch on to, it grows its own solid trunk and become tree like. But it never gives up climbing habit and every flowering season produces long, exploratory grappling-hooks studded with wickedly curved spines to see if it can find something nearby to climb on to.
Serrulate margin of leaves is matching (Ref Flora of Guntur District: Andhra Pradesh, India ).

Leaves are oval with rotund, blunt or mucronate apex is matching (Ref ‘Jungle trees of Central India’, Flora of Eastern Ghats: Hill Ranges of South East India, Volume 1) .

Leaves has 3 long basal nerves + 2 weaker nerves is matching (Ref ‘Jungle trees of Central India’ ).
Leaf base cordate matching (Ref ‘Jungle trees of Central India’,  Flora of Eastern Ghats: Hill Ranges of South East India, Volume 1 )
Hairy stalk of leaf matching (Ref ‘Jungle trees of Central India’ ).
Spines covered with velvet like stag’s antlers is matching (Ref ‘Jungle trees of Central India’ ).
Branchlets rusty colour and tomentose is matching (Ref Flora of Guntur District: Andhra Pradesh, India ).
Habitat: wild vegetation on slope is matching. Plant in attached pictures are growing on steep slope.

Need help identifying this tree : 24 posts by 6 authors. Attachments (1)- 809 kb. Need your help again.
I found this tree in Mahabaleshwar, Maharashtra.
The fruit looks like a Saaj Tree.
But the flowers are different.
The white flower is actually a symbiotic/parasitic plant going on this tree.
Can you help me ID the tree and the flower plant please?

Pl. check comparative images at /species/m—z/r/rhamnaceae/ziziphus

Check Buchanania sp

you have mixed set of pictures. the pink flowers in the first and the last pictures is an orchid,
we need … for the id.
the fourth picture is intriguing. what are those four or five thin wing like things? do you have more pictures of that twig, i.e. did you turn it around and sideways to take pictures of those winged things? they seem like died leaves at first, but???? i would want it verified.
the small flowers may be Ziziphus rugosa. very common in that part of the world. see

The 5 images show different plants …
image5.jpeg … Dendrobium barbatulum Lindl.
image4.jpeg … Ziziphus rugosa Lam.
image3.jpeg … Terminalia sp. … most probably Terminalia elliptica Willd.
image2.jpeg … Terminalia sp. … most probably Terminalia elliptica Willd.
image1.jpeg … Dendrobium barbatulum Lindl.

Excellent … so what ii thought as ziziphus rugosa is really a Terminalia. and the small fruit at the end of the twig is Ziziphus rugosa? Now the twig in 4. but what about the  brown things that look like four or five “leafed” structure just folded leaves?

… and the small fruit at the end of the twig is Ziziphus rugosa?
I am not able to discern fruit in image4.jpeg – which shows inflorescence of Ziziphus rugosa
Maybe if you could crop and send that portion of the image, it will guide me to see it.
but what about the brown things that look like four or five “leafed” structure just folded leaves?
The four or five “leafed” structure is the winged fruit of Terminalia sp.

I just caught my mistake. i was just counting 1, 2, 3,4 and 5 from left to right. left being 1
and rightmost being 5. But i now see these are labeled image5.jpeg on the left most.
that then makes sense. your image 2 is my 4. ulta palta. now its straitened.
but i am still intrigued by the coexistence of both a pair of dried up jujube like 2 fruit??? in image2.jpeg (fourth from left) at the end of the twig and the four or five leafed ?terminalia fruit.
My question:

could this be a diospyros flower sepals really  dried up and their bulbils?

Thanks guys. And the wooden winged fruit belongs to Saj tree? What about the parasitic flower…

which is the parasitic flower in your opinion? which picture or pictures?

This one…

… has answered all nicely, It is not parasite, it is Dendrobium, orchid, an epiphyte, winged fruit is Saj tree as you mentioned (Terminalia elliptica)

Thank you so much! You are a lovely bunch of people…

Exactly. I even said as much. I said the pink flowers were an orchid and we would want … to see it or some such sentence and now you know … and  … have both given you the answer. and … answer was methodical he even listed YOUR image numbers and gave corresponding answer.

… Please read responses carefully from now on.

Thanks … I missed some of the rep[lies in the threaded email content.

But thanks a lot. I am trying for my own learning, to list as many tree and plant species of Maharashtra as I can.

But pl. post each plant in separate mail, as per posting guidelines, in future.
