21032011pj3 ID Confirmation: Location- Place, Altitude – Kaiga , Uttar Kannada ,Karnataka, 380 mtrs – It is Callicarpa macrophylla of the same family-Verbenaceae (now Lamiaceae).
This Callicarpa plant (A small tree) was observed in Phansad. I think it is Callicarpa tomentosa Syn. C.lanata acc. to BSI Flora Mah.
FOI site shows similar plant as Callicarpa macrophylla. Are they same or different? This looks like Callicarpa tomentosa – one of the differences being that the leaves here have entire margins whereas in Callicarpa macrophylla the leaves have dentate margins. That’s why it is called Pandavara batthi. Mythological story says that Pandavas during their exile (vanavasa in the forests) used the leaves to light-up. This is commonly seen near BRT forest range and Coorg area. Thanks very much … for elaborating about the name Pandavara batti. Etymology is always interesting. The epithet ” batti” or ‘batthi’ (ಬತ್ತಿ) actually means “wick” of an oil lamp.

Seems it is Callicarpa tomentosa as it has hairs all over and margin of leaf is entire. Even flower pictures matches with https://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/species/a—l/l/lamiaceae/callicarpa/callicarpa-tomentosa.
As this was not fruiting season, could not picture fruit colour. But rest of the characters points towards tomentosa. Please confirm.
