https://dineshvalke.blogspot.com/2021/12/callicarpa-tomentosa-l-l.html The leaves when lighted using a match stick/ or any other source they start burning like a wick in a lamp, of course without the oil ! That’s why it is called Pandavara batthi. Mythological story says that Pandavas during their exile (vanavasa in the forests) used the leaves to light-up. This is commonly seen near BRT forest range and Coorg area. Thanks very much … for elaborating about the name Pandavara batti. Etymology is always interesting. The epithet ” batti” or ‘batthi’ (ಬತ್ತಿ) actually means “wick” of an oil lamp. Callicarpa tomentosa—-for sharing : 4 posts by 4 authors. Attachments (3)- around 350 kb each.

Please help identify tree with attached tree pictures.
Location: Matheran
Date: Mid December 2018
Stem, leaves, petiole, peduncle, calyx are hairy.
Big tree with few insects resting on it. Sorry, too much dust due to road side location.
Pls check Callicarpa sp. May be Callicarpa macrophylla Vahl ??
Thank you very much … 🙏
Seems it is Callicarpa tomentosa as it has hairs all over and margin of leaf is entire. Even flower pictures matches with https://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/species/a—l/l/lamiaceae/callicarpa/callicarpa-tomentosa.
As this was not fruiting season, could not picture fruit colour. But rest of the characters points towards tomentosa. Please confirm.
