Callicarpa species for ID: Attachments (4)
This Callicarpa plant (A small tree) was observed in Phansad. I think it is Callicarpa tomentosa Syn. C.lanata acc. to BSI Flora Mah.
FOI site shows similar plant as Callicarpa macrophylla.  Are they same or different?

This looks like Callicarpa tomentosa – one of the differences being that the leaves here have entire margins whereas in Callicarpa macrophylla the leaves have dentate margins.

Leaf blades distinctly serrate, oblong or narrowly oblong-ovate; mature fruit white………C. macrophylla

Leaf blades entire, repand or minutely denticulate, broadly ovate; mature fruit purple……C. tomentosa
They are two distinct species with lot of confusion in synonyms
Here is C. macrophylla from Delhi

does this variety develop the bright mauve beauty berries are seen in photographs from temperate countries?

I wish I could have found time to revisit the place and check out the berries.

The leaves when lighted using a match stick/ or any other source they start burning like a wick in a lamp, of course without the oil !  That’s why it is called Pandavara batthi. Mythological story says that Pandavas during their  exile (vanavasa in the forests) used the leaves to light-up. This is commonly seen near BRT forest range and Coorg area.

Thanks very much … for elaborating about the name Pandavara batti. Etymology is always interesting.

The epithet ” batti” or ‘batthi’ (ಬತ್ತಿ)  actually means “wick” of an oil lamp.

Please help identify tree with attached tree pictures.
Location: Matheran
Date: Mid December 2018
Stem, leaves, petiole, peduncle, calyx are hairy.
Big tree with few insects resting on it. Sorry, too much dust due to road side location.

Pls check Callicarpa sp. May be Callicarpa macrophylla Vahl  ??

Thank you very much … 🙏
Seems it is Callicarpa tomentosa as it has hairs all over and margin of leaf is entire. Even flower pictures matches with https://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/species/a—l/l/lamiaceae/callicarpa/callicarpa-tomentosa.
As this was not fruiting season, could not picture fruit colour. But rest of the characters points towards tomentosa. Please confirm.
