Evergreen climbing shrubs, usually glabrous, stem woody, grayish brown, branchlets terete. Leaves lanceolate-elliptic, oblong-elliptic or narrow ovate, 8-15 x 2-6 cm across, base cuneate or attenuate, margins subentire or faintly distantly toothed, apex deeply acute or shallow acuminate, soft and rather fleshy and pale beneath, glabrous, lateral veins 6-10 on either side of the midrib, almost parallel, impressed above, prominent on midrib beneath, reticulate veinlets, petiole glabrous, reddish maroon, about 1.5-3.5 cm long, exstipulate. Flowers 1-4, fragrant, yellowish white or red, sometimes with 1-2 secondary bracts, about 2.5 cm across. Male flowers: Perianth segments 7-8 in 3 series, pale pink or white, broadly elliptic or obovate, 1-2 x 0.5-1.5 cm across, pedicels about 1-4 cm long, Stamens about 30-50, outer filaments short, free, stamina column ovoid or cylindric above, about 10-15 mm long, anthers oblong or ovoid, 2-3 mm long, connectives thickened. Female flowers: Perianth as male, carpels 60-120, ovoid, about 1.5 x 0.75 mm with about 0.5 mm long appendage. Fruiting receptacle, about 15-20 cm long, and 4-7 mm thick, peduncle about 3-7 cm long, fleshly, usually bearing 30-80, ellipsoid, fruitlets about 7-9 x 5-6 mm across, seeds 1-2, suborbicular or ellipsoid.

Mixed and temperate forests of northwestern and eastern Himalayas, altitude of about 2,100-4,000 m.

WOW…. googling got me this: this is indeed Schisandra grandiflora…. (S. incarnata has red flowers) Congrartulations for the 10,000 feeet climb…

It reminds me of Sapium insigne, but it’s just a wild guess as I can’t see if this is a tree or a shrub.


It is not Sapium insigne.
