Looks like a Diplopterygium. No it is not Diplopterygium/Gleichenia – that is quite different and also not present in South India. This is Pteridium revolutum (Blume) Nakai, which occurs commonly almost throughout India. You will find it referred to as P. aquilinum sometimes, especially in 19th Century literature, or in works that are not aware of modern fern taxonomy – but that species is European and African, and not present in India. Could be Hypolepis resistens. If there had been a closeup of the lower surface of the leaf, one could say something with certainty Please look at it more carefully – it is quite clearly and definitely the Pteridium, as I said. Hypolepis is far more finely dissect – the third photo magnifies quite well and shows without any doubt at all that it is Pteridium revolutum. This does not need to be confused any further. WELL YOU ARE CORRECT … my only objection is THAT IF THE FERTILE PORTION HAD BEEN PHOTOGRAPHED! ONE COULD BE CERTAIN Ah yes, that’s definitely right – I agree it wasn’t a very informative photo in many respects!
This is Pteridium revolutum, the S. Asian Bracken, a poisonous fern (though not as poisonous as Thelypteris arida!). .
Can you send fotos of this showing under suface of leaf and close pictures, sothat I can Identify, because Pteridium, hypolepis ,Histiopteris etc have this same posture. But tendatively I think it may be Pteridium aquilinum, not sure
Pteridium revolutum as per Kas Week: PKA12— Fern from Kas
I repeat it is Pteridium revolutum (syn. P. aquilinum subsp. wightianum). . References:
