please find one of the soil binder which help to build sand dunes to protect the soil erosion (first line defense against the storm and sea water intrusion to the agricultural fields of the villagers) followed by casuarina (second line defense) and mangroves (Third line defense). This will be a series of those plants that recently visited to check how safe the coasts are in Astaranga of Puri district of Odisha. This is the first posting of the series. Due to heavy load of field work i am not getting time to share the plants from my region. I wl try my best to highlight the ecological importance of some of these plants through my photography.

Name of the species: sesuvium portulacastrum
Family:Aizoaceae
Habit: Herb
Habitat: wild, in sea coast between casuarina and sea beaches
Importance: medicinal uses and soil binders (help in Sand dune formation).

Nice set of pics …
When I do field work, I usually carry a small A4 size blackboard with a strip of graph paper pasted on one side for scale. My friend … used a velvet cloth which she used to spread on ground and put the dissected parts on the cloth to take pics. Velvet cloth doesnt shine with flash But she never used flash saying that it changes the
original colour. I remember we both used to spend hours with on our respective black things and at that time we both used film roll camera!! One roll for not more than 3 species was our logic and at the end we had thousands of pics, many of which were drastically bad. When I came to Dehradun after finishing my field work, I had a trunk of albums which i burnt during last Holi :).
Using hand in your pics make it more HANDY pic :).
Hope you understood what I meant.

… I like the way you take photographs of different species.
Another good one from you. The ecological importance written in the post is also worth.
Thanks for sharing. Keep up the work you are doing.

Quite a detailed photography

Sesuvium portulacastrum ?
I have doubt about this.

thanks a lot in pointing out the difference in Sesuvium portulacastrum and the species uploaded here. Since i was in field i cud not respond to the group. After rechecking the specimen, it appears Hydrophylax maritima of Rubiaceae
Succulent herb with creeping stems. Leaves fleshy, obovate, ovate or ovate-oblong.Fls. lilac. Fruit oblong-ovoid, crowned with enlarged calyx lobes.
please find the reference document attached bellow.

* name coined, for want of name
– the coined names in the regional languages, they all mean “the sea chain”; named so for the plant’s preferred habitat of sandy sea shore; and the long spreading strands of the plant, rooting at nodes, allude to a mass of chains

I didn’t hear this Malayalam name, but the correct English spelling for ചങ്ങല is ‘Changala’ means chain. If it’s name in English translation ‘cannala’ is correct, then the correct Malayalam pronunciation or spelling is ‘കന്നല’ and I think the correct Malayalam name of this plant is same കടൽ ചങ്ങല ‘kadal changala’.

Kannada name is apt. However, the English transliteration for ಸಾಗರ is sagara. This may be incorporated if agreeable.

Sending once again for i.d., A succulent from Golden Beach, Puri.

Could it be Sea Purslane (Sesuvium portulacastrum), commonly found on sea-shores- Flowers of India
Check out other images on the web.
(just got a thought from … s reply against … mail today)

It is not a Sesuvium. It is more likely a Mesembrianthemum, as … suggested.
