This herb was growing on the roadside near the Delhi canal.
Tried to find out the ID in the books but proved a wild goose chase.
Sonepat, Haryana, 11 April 09.

Looks like some polygonum species. Will post the pix once it flowers
It looks like Polygonum persicaria, particularly with darkish (or purplish) patches on the leaves at the link www.missouriplants.com/Pinkalt/Polygonum_pers… Sorry …, the link is not working though it was mentioned in the google search.
