Tufted herbs; stem 4-angular, angles narrowly winged. Leaves ovate, to 4 x 3 mm, estipulate, sessile, chartaceous, glabrous, 3-ribbed, midvein thickened, connate at base, base rounded, apex acute, mucronate, basal(rosette) leaves smaller than stem leaves. Cymes to 2 cm; bracts to 0.7 mm; peduncle to 1.5 cm. Flower(s) 1-3. Calyx-lobes 5, triangular, glabrous, keeled, mucronate, valvate. Corolla blue, 3.5 mm wide; tube 1.2 cm; lobes 5, suborbicular, to 2 x 2 mm, twisted, with folds in between. Stamens 5; filaments elliptically dilated in the middle. Ovary 1-celled; ovules many; stigma 2-fid, curved. Capsule oblong-truncate, to 4.5 x 2.5 mm, surmounted by persistent calyx-lobes; stalk longer than calyx-lobe; seeds numerous, ellipsoid-trigonous.

Gentiana quadrifaria Blume, Fam Gentianaceae, small herb in grass land at Ooty area of Tamilnadu at an altitude of 1800m, near Pycara


As per Indian Gentianaceae: A checklist, we have only G. quadrifaria var. zeylanica occurring in S. India, all rest mostly G. pedicellata

Could it be G. quadrifaria var. zeylanica?

Yes sir, Gamble’s description and distribution also points towards Gentiana quadrifaria var. zeylanica.

Attached are pictures of what was earlier identified on this forum as Gentiana quadrifaria. These flowers were captured on the 9th Mile Meadows on the way to Pykara, Ooty.
… has also posted similar flowers, may be these may be the same.
