Annuals or perennials; culms 30-120 cm high, stout and erect; nodes glabrous. Leaves 15-30 x 1-2 cm, linear lanceolate, margins and nerves scabrid; sheath slightly keeled; ligule 4-5 mm broad, membranous. Racemes 3-15 together, 5-20 cm long, sub-digitate; rachis triquetrous, scabrid. Spikelets with unequal pedicels, 3 x 1 mm, brown; lower glume minute; upper glume 2.5 x 1 mm, brown, ciliate along the nerves; first lemma similar to upper glume, glabrous, epaleate, second lemma 2 x 1 mm, ovate, nerves obscure; palea similar to lemma.
