Taken two days ago (7.11.14) in McLeodganj. Please advise.

nice that you have the spore but one also need the whole leaf and plant if possible

Photo is inadequate – need to see the whole thing, including stipe-base scales. However it is almost surely Dryopteris carolihopei Fraser-Jenk. rather than D. nigropaleacea. Stipe-base scales should be pale rufous brown and rather scurfy


Following up on this, I took fresh photographs. Here are some with unique ID points;

1. The fronds are long reaching a metre or more. The pinnules are dull matt green and are herbaceous 
2. The base is scurfy with brown flaky scales as Dr Chris suggested. I did not get the rhizome out with my sample but the green part is where it was attached to it. Stile is green sparsely covered in brown scales. 
3. Sori are round (more like horseshoe shape), brown and about 10-12 (or more) in number on each pinnule. Stipe is smooth and light green underneath.

Beautiful fern uploaded. The genus Dryopteris is prone to hybridize, so it is very difficult to identify the species, however the morphological details are same as Dryopteris intermedia.

Yes, that’s very definite D. carolihopei all right.
