Litsea laevigata Gamble, Fl. Madras 1236 1925. ;

Habit- Trees up to 7 m tall. Trunk & Bark- Bark brown, lenticellate, smooth; blaze light orange.
Branches and Branchlets- Young branchlets subterete, glabrescent.
Leaves- Leaves simple, alternate distichous; petiole 0.4-1.5 cm long, planoconvex in cross section, glabrous; lamina 7-18 x 2-5.5 cm, usually oblanceolate to narrow elliptic, apex acuminate, base acute, margin entire, chartaceous, glaucous beneath, glabrescent beneath; midrib flat above; secondary nerves 7-9; tertiary nerves reticulo-percurrent.
Inflorescence / Flower- Inflorescence umbels in axillary and lateral sessile or shortly peduncled clusters; flowers unisexual.
Fruit and Seed- Berry, ellipsoid, to 1.5 cm long, seated on fruiting perianth cup; seeds 1.
Common understorey trees in low and medium elevation evergreen forests between 200 and 1000 m.
Endemic to the Western Ghats- South and Central Sahyadris.
