India: In tropical wet evergreen forests of Western Ghats particularly in sholas and in Northeastern states in forests up to 1800 m. West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala; Thailand and South Western China as per Catalogue of Life;
Tamil: Katta pinnai, Punnai, Srikonnai.  Malayalam: Kattupunna, Malampunna, Pinnapai, Punna, Punnapine.  Kannada: Poon, Salhonne, Surhoni as per Biotik;

Habit- Tall trees, up to 35 m tall.

Trunk & Bark- Outer bark yellowish, with strong boat shape fissures; inner bark fibrous; blaze reddish.
Branches and Branchlets- Branchlets quadrangular, glabrous.
Exudates- Latex watery turning yellowish, not profuse.
Leaves- Leaves simple, opposite, decussate; petiole 0.8-2.5 cm long, planoconvex in cross section, glabrescent; lamina 5-9 x 2-4 cm, elliptic-lanceolate, apex acute to acuminate, base usually attenuate, sometimes acute, coriaceous; secondary nerves many, close, parallel, nearly right angle to midrib, terminating at thick margin.
Inflorescence / Flower- Flowers white, fragrant, in panicles.
Fruit and Seed- Drupe, ellipsoid, apiculate, to 3.7 cm long, 1- seeded.
Common canopy trees in wet evergreen forests up to 1600 m.
Indochina and Indomalaysia; in the Western Ghats- South and Central Sahyadris.
