Similar to Berberis aristata but stems yellowish and strongly grooved; Leaves 3-6 x 1.25-1.75cm, usually entire, sometimes spinose-toothed; racemes c 4cm, subumbellate above; outer sepals narrowly elliptic,c 5 x 2mm, carinate, inner obovate, 5-6 x 3-4mm; petals obovate, 4-5 x 3-4mm; berries ellipsoid, 8-10 x 5-6mm.
