ID Request 1 – North Bengal White Wildflowers – 10May09SJ – indiantreepix | Google Groups :
while a couple of earlier posts await identification, thought I would send my quota for the day. Here is the first – this is a White series.

Looks like “Isodon lophanthoides” from Lamiaceae family.

I second … ID

/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/isodon2a.jpg

I have a slight confusion over the species isodon lophanthoides, I know this topic has been covered before but….
Two of my observations have been id’d as isodon lophanthoides, I am sure there is a logical explanation or a variation of species… could someone enlighten me about this…. Is there a sub-species of isodon lophanthoides…??
To me the two plants vary in size, leaves and the flowers vary in colour. their streaks/spots and even in the lower lips…. but…
What is labeled as Isodon1 was discussed in the thread
Isodon2 is also similar to isodon lophanthoides

… perhaps there is some difference between when you identify from books and study plants without flowers. Luckily we saw both on our trip to Chakrata and you must have seen we uploaded them also
Your Isodon1 is Plectranthus barbatus. (syn:Coleus barbatus (Andrews) Benth.; Coleus forskohlii (Poir.) Briquet😉
your Isodon2 is Isodon lophanthoides (syn Plectranthus gerardianus)
I hope now your doubts are over

I think your Isodon1 appears close to images at Isodon coetsa (Buch.-Ham. ex D.Don) Kudô

Kalatope id al250911:
Another small flower for id

Location Kalatope, Chamba
Altitude 2100 mts
Habit herb
Habitat wild
Height 12 inches
Season September

Can it be Isodon sp. of Lamiaceae (I. rugosus)

I think I have given reply to this in thread:[efloraofindia:89779] Confusion of isodon lophanthoides from Kalatope
This plant is Isodon lophanthoides (syn Plectranthus gerardianus)

Place: Cairn Hill (about 7460 ft asl), Ooty.
Time: November 16, 2011 at 8.07am
Habit: erect herb, about a metre high
Habitat: growing wild in evergreen forest
Plant: growing gregariously, single-stemmed – not branched
Leaf: somewhat similar to that of Plectranthus mollis, size and arrangement-wise
Inflorescence: about a foot long panicle, terminal as well as axillary
Flower size: about 10 – 12 mm long

I hope Isodon lophanthoides (syn Plectranthus gerardianus)

Am convinced it to be Isodon lophanthoides (family: Lamiaceae).

This plant was uploaded during Lamiaceae Week.
It is Isodon lophanthoides (syn Plectranthus gerardianus)

Yes Sir, Thanks a lot for correction.

very nice, does it have any scent when you crush the leaves?

I think all of us on the trip missed that point, especially I never crushed the leaves or smelt the flowers of this, of course it would be having nice fragrance…

That’s alright, some plectranthus have nice smell… and their surface “hairs” always look as if they have some oil droplets… and in Calcutta air they trap dark particles that dont wash away easily… that’s all

Lamiaceae (Incl. Verbenaceae) Fortnight: Isodon lopanthoides from Gori Valley- NS May 56/56 : 1 post by 1 author. Attachments (4)
These are the pics recorded from Gori valley..
Isodon lopanthoides..

Family: Lamiaceae
Date: 26th December 2015
Place: Agumbe, Karnataka

Habit: Herb
Habitat: Riparian

This was earlier identified as Isodon sp. by … and then later … too agreed.
But a species could not be identified then.
Isodon in Digital Fl. Karnataka provides the following species.

Please validate if this can be Plectranthus stocksii J. Hooker (Isodon lophanthoides (Buch.-Ham. ex D.Don) H.Hara).
Identification feature according to JCB is the presence of red glands on the underside of leaves and calyx and corolla. I am not sure if they are present on the leaves and corolla but the calyx is definitely dotted with red glands. I am attaching a close up of the calyx.

May I know how did you identify the genus, please.

I did not identify the genus by myself sir. … in an earlier post of the same plant had provided the ID.
Do not know where to begin with generic level identification for Lamiaceae yet.

Well, I do not know either.

I think id is correct.
FoC says P. stocksii is synonym of Isodon lophanthoides var. lophanthoides. FBI says P. stocksii Hook. f. “possibly a form of P. striatus, but is a larger plant.” FBI further informs Heyne’s specimen, though very small, is this one.
Type specimen of the above can be viewed – http://apps.kew.org/herbcat/getImage.do?imageBarcode=K001067855

3 more herb that may interest you –

FoC says Lamiaceae flowers are bisexual. Then why in its illustrations it shows female flower in another species – http://www.efloras.org/object_page.aspx?object_id=4495&flora_id=2?

Thank you sir.
Heyne’s specimen has been collected from ‘Baba Budan Hills’ which is the current day Bababudangiri in Chikamagalur, a shola grassland area. The altitude is known to affect the size of almost all plants, according to one professor who told me this. This could be the reason for the small size. Although I cannot be sure, I do not know the scientific reason to explain this.
As to the second part- Polygamous flowers? Female flowers with staminodes? I do not know. May be someone acquainted with this can answer!

Thank you for the info, after quite a search found that lamiaceae can show gynomonoecy – http://www.scielo.br/

Thank you again … I had thought so too initially but the leaves in photos on the internet look so different (my sample looks closer to a spurge) that I dismissed that thought. The leaves on my sample are thick and leathery with tips curved up on the ones on top. Do you think it’s just a variation? Please advise.

Upper leaves appear a bit deformed. In the leaves there is a lot of variation as can be seen at Isodon lophanthoides (Buch.-Ham. ex D.Don) H.Hara

Thank you … … had kindly pointed out the variation in leaves last year too. Thank you for re-examining it. I am looking forward to returning soon and finding these plants flowering.

Isodon sp ..???

Appears interesting.

Yes, looks like. I thought it to be Isodon lophanthoides (Buch.-Ham. ex D.Don) H.Hara so took some random shots but while checking at home flower pattern looked different.
Unfortunately, I did not collect specimen also.

Very interesting, I’ve not come across! Pl. check Fl China too!

Could you please guide me which genus to check specially ? Isodon ??

I checked all Isodons in China but i could not find any image matching and it is difficult for me to go with descriptions.

Did not find match with any Labiatae found in the Kathmandu

Valley listed according to the Flora of Kathmandu Valley.

I think Nepal species are give under Rabdosia as below. Pl. check

I tried all Isodon, Rabdosia, Coleus, Plectranthus and some other sp listed in Nepal but no luck.

Check only the Rabdosia species which are not available in efi so far.

I tried all possibilities!

It has  been identified as Isodon lophanthoides (Ruch.-Ham. ex D. Don) by Dr. Chunlei from China.
Any further opinions ?

But I am still confused … since the flower image does not match with so may images I had clicked of Isodon lophanthoides (Ruch.-Ham. ex D. Don)

Ask Dr. Chunlei, if it can be from any of these species.
I think Nepal species are give under Rabdosia as below. Pl. check

He has already said twice as its ID so I feel awkward to ask again. By the way isn’t the petal/corolla pattern looks  completely different than the Isodon lophanthoides ?

Yes, it looks different.

I am afraid it turns out to be new species😂 !

But before that you have to rule out species at http://www.efloras.org/browse.aspx?flora_id=110&start_taxon_id=127871

and there is no shame in holding on to a set of pictures as Dubia like … taught us until such time that our reading and knowledge catches up with our camera shutters.
go thru the list on that page link in … post, take each species and read about it, google it etc etc to find your sp id. if the latest exercise does not yield, let it rest, it will come to us/you

It is Isodon lophanthoides !

Has anything changed since last discussion?

I have shot few images yesterday. I shall post in few days time.

OK.

Yes, you seems to be right in view of your post at Isodon lophanthoides (Buch.-Ham. ex D.Don) H.Hara

However it has already been identified  I am enclosing some fresh images showing purple tint in the petal margins shot recently at the same location as earlier images as promised
you earlier. I guess there is no doubt left now.

Isodon lophanthoides var. graciliflorus (Benth.) H.Hara ??

Yes, it appears so, as per Keys in Flora of China.

POWO and Catalogue of Life, mention only this variety other than the type variety.

But I find a lot of variation in leaves in our posts at Isodon lophanthoides, not only in leaf apex but also in other aspects of the leaves.
So in view, I feel we should not segregate our posts based on these keys and keep them as these are now.
“Although some authors recognize “Plectranthus gerardianus” as a separate species and others recognize it as one of the varieties of Isodon lophanthoides (var. gerardianus (Benth.) Hara), our specimens (with the available material) all seem to be the same taxon.”

I guess this is different.

I want to know if you have collected specimens and would you share some leaves to me please?

This should be Isodon lophanthoides var. graciliflorus (Benth.) H.Hara.
Isodon phulchokiensis is in another mail.

Yes, it is Isodon lophanthoides var. graciliflorus. Thanks for sharing beautiful pictures.

Isodon lophanthoides (Buch.-Ham. ex D.Don) H.Hara ??
Never seen such a tiny plant in a flowering stage.

Yes, it is Isodon lophanthoides var. lophanthoides

Thank you … Is there any difference between
Isodon lophanthoides (Buch.-Ham. ex D.Don) H.Hara and Isodon lophanthoides var. lophanthoides ?

Both mean the same thing.

Thank you …
What does Infraspesies mean.
http://www.plantsoftheworldonline/

Both infraspecies are different.

In the above link you mean to say infraspecies  Isodon lophanthoides var. graciliflorus (Benth.) H.Hara is different and infraspecies Isodon lophanthoides var. lophanthoides  and  sp. Isodon lophanthoides (Buch.-Ham. ex D.Don) H.Hara are same ??

Yes, …

Please don’t mind. I am still a bit confused. Why is infraspecies Isodon lophanthoides var. lophanthoides  is same to the main sp. and infraspecies Isodon lophanthoides var. graciliflorus (Benth.) H.Hara is different?

Before Isodon lophanthoides var. graciliflorus (Benth.) H.Hara was published, there was only Isodon iophanthoides and there was no need of writing Isodon iophanthoides as Isodon lophanthoides var. lophanthoides

OK … ! I was confused according to the post from …

…, there is a simple rule of nomenclature. A species may not have any infraspecific taxon (subspecies, variety, forma) but once a variant is recognised as infraspecific taxon, it automatically creates two, the variant taxon and type taxon which will get the same epithet as specific epithet. We call it autonym.

Could not find a match as per comparative images at Isodon.
Any keys?

Maybe Isodon hispidus as per POWO specimens- one and two.
But I have to see the details.
Pl. post high res. images.

1 high res. images.

This must be: efi thread

Keys in Flora of China are on the lines of those in The Flora of Mizoram, as below:

48 (47) Calyx densely villous 25 Isodon hispidus
+ Calyx sparsely villous basally 26 Isodon lophanthoides

POWO says “This species (I. hispidus) is very similar to Isodon lophanthoides, and the two species are often confused in herbaria. In the wild, I. hispidus is a larger and more pubescent taxon, although the types (Wall. Cat. 2741) are less hairy than some specimens”

So there is a lot of confusion.
Posted images appear close to … images at Isodon lophanthoides (Buch.-Ham. ex D.Don) H.Hara
There does not appear to be any live images of I. hispidus on the net.
So we take it as Isodon lophanthoides for the time being.

Yes, it is Isodon only, may be I scrophularoides or coets, unless specimens studies species identity difficult.

It looks different from images at Isodon scrophularioides and Isodon coetsa
