Vegetable for ID : Brassicaceae Family : Oman : 120213 : AK-1:  seen this cultivated vegetable in a farm, on 1/2/2013 along with other common vegetables like Cauliflower, Cabbage, Brinjals, etc.

Plants were around 3 feet tall with purple flowers.

Any idea about the id?

Very nice, …

Pods are what we call Mogri in gujarati and eat them in salads and very quick saute…

I found some being grown in the staff housing near the annual car rally, the pods were inviting.. i took a few pictures and the lady of the house came out yelling , but turned to smiles when she discovered that all i wanted was to take pictures…

and we get mogri in  the vegetable markets were there is a sizable gujarati , marathi and konkani/ goan population… the sabziwalas make a bundle
I had seen a couple of pictures many years ago in a travel magazine where these pods/mogri-fruits-pods were served in bowls in a bar along with beer in germany…  those were the days when we still had east and west germany… that’s how old the information is …    and i had taken the picture ot my local grocery store manager to see if he could find me those pods…

and he did a year later… and he kept selling them out totally for about  a week or two.. when the local farm ran out of their radish crop…  and we did this for about a couple of more years till we moved
but have not found a real reference  about use in germany …

some intrepid traveler can perhaps get a picture or two and a story to go with it…

well …., as far as i remember the pods you are talking about we call in maharashtra “Dingri“. Am I correct …?

Mula or rettisch (german) has many forms. we get here long mula about 40 cm white, round, black and round, then we also get Radieschen, mostly red, which are much smaller.
All are differently sharp in taste. we also buy seeds and sprouts are eaten in salad. round rettisch is mostly eaten with bear, one gets thursty after eating salted rettisch and it is good for the barkeepers pocket.
In Pune my mom used to cut the top of the mula with tiny green leaves and put it in soil. The plant produces the pods “dingri”.
I try that here too but depending upon the weather i get the pods or not.

if you’ll keep it in mind and take pictures if you ever see them in germany or that neck of the woods  even supermarket or open air farmers market

it would be very interesting to find that two different widely different cultures eat the pods

This is the picture of seeds of radish. I can’t say if it is red or white variety. I haven’t seen any other than the red or white or reddish-white. Both red and white are of same size. We eat only the root and leaves. I do not have any story on seeds, except that I bought a few today. To me radish leaves are tasy SHAK/ SHAG (leafy veg.).

In our childhood we used to eat GOTA-SEDDHO during Saraswati Puja. It was not that tasty but novel surely.. in the sense that we did not eat GOTA-SEDDHO during any other time of the year. Radish played an important part in GOTA-SEDDHO! Surely not all vegetables were cooked whole, ie. without chopping them, as have been described in the websites.

don’t eat the seeds
these are surely sold for growing radishes
so may have been coated/treated with many chemicals to prevent sprouting on their own
and anti-fungal and anti-helmenthic meds and god only knows what else..
it does not seem to be a highly controlled/inspected  affair
EATING the seedpods is a different story…
if i find some this winter i’ll post the pictures in this thread

Didi, my mom doesn’t cook GOTA-SEDDHO. I used to visit our ancestral home, in Memari, several times a year. I ate GOTA-SEDDHO there, with my cousins and uncles…
