10102011-BS-1 Cyperaceaea member from Pujam Karnal for id:
Cyperaceae member from Pujam Karnal for id
stem cylindrical, hollow about 30-50 cm
wild, aquatic

Weeds are beautiful… Schoenoplectus mucronatus (L.) Palla

Thanks …. Some doubts
In Schoenoplectus mucronatus the position of inflorescence seems to be on upper half of the plant and plant not straight above the inflorescence. In my plant inflorescence was just 3-4 cm above ground on 30-50 cm plant

Your doubt is genuine.

I was little hasty in identifying the plant….Sorry!
Culm of this plant is also terete and not triangular as found in S. mucronatus.
After going through Fl. China, the plant appears to me as S. articulatus (L.) Palla.
Experts’ comments are welcome!

Can this be a Juncus or Juncaceae member?

can this be a sp of Scirpus

Just an update: Schoenoplectiella articulata (L.) Lye =Schoenoplectus articulatus (L.) Palla
=Scirpus articulatus L.

Did u dissect the plant? How about the nuts? Attaching herewith an ethno-botany paper for your kind perusal. Photographs provided in the paper matches with your plant. Hope this helps.

Yes …. Agreed Thanks for the efforts put for id of this Plant
It is Schoenoplectiella articulata (L.) Lye only

Cyperaceae : Schoenoplectus from Hooghly:
This is likely to be Schoenoplectus articulatus (Linnaeus) Palla, CHIRCHIRA in Bengali. If you place the hollow cylindrical terete culm between your thumb and index and run your fingers while keeping pressed it gives you a purring sound! That is why it is called CHIRCHIRA in Bengali!

H & H : very common in marsh and lowland; first three pics are of young tufts taken in a moist land and the rest three are of mature species beside a pond; 1 foot to 3 feet high

This interesting plant was shot from a community forest area in a village in Karnal district.. hope I will get the id.. Cyperus/Scirpus??? The stem cylindrical with ring like markings at regular intervals…

I think its Scirpus articulatus.

I also think it is Scirpus articulatus, as … identified. The ring like markings are of septa inside the culms.

In my research capacity we travel to a number of rice growing areas each year. This year we visited places where deep water rice is grown. This weed was taken in a rice field in Cuttack. Sorry should have posted during the grasses week

This seems to be Schoenoplectus articulatus (L.) Palla (syn. of Schoenoplectiella articulata (L.) Lye as per KEW).

Thank you … for the Id.

Thank you …, it is also common here (West Bengal).

It was Scirpus articulatus L. in FBI, a page from history – http://plantillustrations.org/illustration.php?id_illustration=123445.

Check with Schoenoplectiella …,
it might be Schoenoplectiella senegalensis

POWO gives distribution of Schoenoplectiella senegalensis in S.India.
Can it be Schoenoplectiella articulata (L.) Lye as per images and details herein?

Schoenoplectiella articulata (L.) Lye or Scripus articulata, common aquatic plant. Can it grow completely submerged? As I have found it growing in deep water bodies. The reeds are hollow to ensure flow of oxygen to roots like most aquatic plants.

Sedge for ID : Nasik : 13JAN22 : AK – 21: 4 images.
Sedge seen near the Gangapur Lake today (13.1.22).

To me appears close to images at Schoenoplectiella articulata (L.) Lye
But I think only Experts can confirm it or otherwise.

Looks close to me as well.
