Kindly identify this Rhadiola species
Location: Paddar Valley J&K
Altitude: 4600 meters
Date: 7th August 2011

Looks like Rhodiola tibetica. Can’t be sure though.

I repeat my comments about how difficult Rhodiola is identification-wise and what a muddle exists.
I am still working on Rhodiolas of Ladakh and am not certain about some species.
These images from Paddar Valley do not match what I am currently thinking comes within Rhodiola tibetica.
Stewart knew this plant as Sedum tibeticum but he had no records for Kashmir but as Koelz collected what is understood to be this in Zanskar, then Paddar valley @ 4600m would be bordering Zanskar – so not a complete surprise if the species grew at the far end of the valley.
Records for R.tibetica range from 3600-5700m in Chitral, Swat, Astor, Baltistan & Ladakh incl. North of Khardung La.
I have my doubts about the images on the FOI site name as this species, just as the current image for Sedum oreades is a misidentification for what is a Rhodiola.
The specimen photographed for the FOI were in Arunachal Pradesh, which is a surprising location for R.tibetica, which has not been recorded from Nepal, Sikkim or Bhutan.

I am not sure if I had posted it earlier as I could not find in the list of posts !

This species of Rhodiola is again common in similar heights of way to Khardungla. As … said R. heterodonta I am also sure that this should be true. The broadly lance like-triangular leaves with irregularly toothed margin is the identifying feature of the species. The botanical name heterodonta means having different kinds of teeth which is visible in this species.

Yes, this could be Rhodiola heterodonta, but I am not sure.

I find it a bit different from images at Rhodiola fastigiata (Hook. f. & Thomson) S.H. Fu and FoC illustration.

After checking all the species showing distribution in Uttarakhand as per Checklist of BSI Flora of India and those listed in Himachal at Another Rhodiola ABAUG2017/37, closest I could reach is Rhodiola tibetica (Hook. f. & Thomson) S.H. Fu as per GBIF specimen- one and two and description as below from Flora of China:
Stem leaves linear to narrowly ovate, 5-9 × 1.5-4 mm, base broadly triangular, margin entire or dentate, apex long acuminate and awn-shaped.

I think you are right.

We have kept it earlier at Rhodiola quadrifida (Pallas) Fischer & Meyer

This was at the Chang la (the top) next to Chang la baba mandir, Ladakh in August 2022.

Arrived at the name based on eFI and FoI pics.

Requested to please validate

It (Rhodiola himalensis– POWO, GBIF, BSI Flora of India, Checklist of Nepal, FoC, FoC illustration) seems quite close and confusing with Rhodiola tibetica (Hook. f. & Thomson) S.H. Fu (POWO, GBIF specimen, BSI Flora of India, FoP, FoC, FoC illustration) on perusal of these resources.
Going by the distribution in eFloras and BSI Flora of India, I am taking it as Rhodiola tibetica (Hook. f. & Thomson) S.H. Fu

Also Checklist of Ladakh does not give distribution of Rhodiola himalensis in Ladakh.


I am not sure about the ID but according to the following link and attachments, R. himalensis looks like having distribution in Jammu and Kashmir.

ID OF THIS FLOWERING SHRUB FROM ALPINE ZONE OF 17OOO FT DRASS LOC SECTOR — 3: 1 image.
Could the members of the esteemed group assist in the ID of this flowering shrub growing in the Alpine zone of 17,000 feet in the Drass LOC sector where the Kargil War was fought in the summer of 1999.

Leaves are not clearly seen.
