Is this any species of Avicennia or allied genus ?

The fruit doesn’t confirm it to be Avicennia !! the flower is so weird !1

I hope it is not some selfa or Mixa !!!

I don’t know the flower looks very close to the Avicennia flowers but the fruit is completely different !!
Who will generate Selfa or Mixa in the jungle these genera are common in gardens

The plant look like a Sonneratia sp.,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonneratia

It is Sonneratia apetela
Local Marathi name: Chipi

This is a call for …,……….please reply.
Isnt this plant the one you were showing from Sikkim….so most probably this is not necessarily a mangrove plant!!!

As Pravin pointed out, this should be  Sonneratia mangrove (Sonneratia apetala)
“apetala” means it has no petals it only has 4 sepals, And a very interesting pistil with stigma looking like a mushroom!
http://www.flowersofindia.Sonneratia%20Mangrove.html

It is definitely sonneratia apetala

it is for Sure Sonneratia apetala.
the 4 fleshy spreading calyx in fruit and the umbrella-shaped stigma clearly points out towards Sonneratia apetala.
it can be found ocassionaly along the Mumbai coast.

To me also it looks like Sonneratia apetala. Its picture and description is given in flowersofindia, I think by …

… me too, Sonneratia apetala … commonly known as: mangrove apple, sonneratia mangrove • Bengali: keora • Marathi: चिपी chipi, कांदळ or कांडळ kandal • Oriya: khirwa • Tamil: மரம மரம் marama maram • Telugu: క్యలన్కి kyalanki

It has been observed that only the mangroves Sonneratia apetala shows fungus type growth on the leaves, flowers and fruits. later the white fibrous material spreads with wind all over the area (like bombax ceiba)
No other mangrove spp. do suffer from  this type of disease
Expert may pl. comment

Many thanks … never took a close look at this kind of fungal growth — all the time have been thinking it to be related to salt secretion !!

I really doubt this to be a fungal infection. Seems like some nesting thing for some insect. May be spider!

May be some scale insects.

Ink Illustration 1:Sonneratia Flowers :AVD-07012012:

Taking cue from … suggestion of starting a series of illustrations, am initiating this one. Would be sharing illustrations from my sketchbook that I have been maintaining for last 10 years.
There has been a transition in quality from my first illustration to this date.
The one I shared last Cerbera manghas was the latest one.
As mentioned by … in his last email, am currently working on illustrations for the book ‘ Costal Plants of Western India’ to be authored by him. To maintain the exclusivity of the book, those sketches wont be a part of this series.
It is a great opportunity for me to share my work and also retrospect.
There are few issues with my scanner. The scan quality may not be very clear at times. Please excuse me for this.
There could be illustrations that are not upto the mark as I was fumbling in my initial years. Still am including them in this series.

This is awesome Adittya. Terrific clarity. U have lot of talent.  Keep up the good work and keep sharing..
Happy to know that you and … are coming out with a book on “Coastal plants of Western India”. Looking forward for the same and my best wishes to both of you..

Sonneratia apetala – illustration:
Would like to share ink illustration of Sonneratia apetala – Popularly known as mangrove apple.

Yes Nice and clear illustration. Thanks Dear … for sharing.
…, … is one of our old member from Mumbai and he is very fond of making illustrations and sketches. Just to tell you, he has written series of articles in Mumbai based Marathi daily “Lokasatta” on wild flowers. All these articles were very informative and simple.

Thats really nice to know. I could see that artistic touch in botanical illustration of his…
Seems similar to the one in Flora of Maharastra!!! orchidaceae section…

I know you are also from Pune and I can only say that you are a great artist indeed.

Plz id this tree: pa53 – 13dec2012:
Plz id this tree from mnagrove habit near Mankhurd region. I only have the photos of the foliage.

There is a mix up meaning the images do not belong to one species. There are two species in the image set posted by you. One of the plant is Sonneratia apetala while the plant in last image seem to be Rhizophora muronata (just a speculation as leaves and other details are missing).

Thank you … I thought the last photo were new leafs of the same tree but maybe I mixed up. I am ataching one more photo that I had cliked along with the other photos in my email.
I am posting some other photos of the trees from another spot in seperate emails.

This is again Sonneratia apetala.

Avicennia officinalis

it is small plant of Sonneratia apetala. it grows to a medium to large sized tree.

I also agree with …

It is more closer to images at Sonneratia apetala rather than images at Avicennia officinalis

It is also a കണ്ടൽ kantal.

Though it is a കണ്ടൽ kantal (generic name for true mangroves), this species is not distributed in Kerala.
