Begonia dipetala

This is Begonia dipetala Graham.

Begonia dipetala

Yes, it is Begonia dipetala, thank you very much for ID my plant.

The name of the species is: Begonia dipetala Graham; Synonym: Begonia malabarica var, dipetala (Graham) Thwaites

Both are most welcome. I too collected when I was a research scholar during 1982-85 periods from Nedumkandan, Myladumpara, Pampadumpara, Poopara etc along canals and wet rocks near cardamom plantations. It’s very beautiful when it blooms and is eye-catching. Thanks for recollecting my vivid memories of this plant. It is endemic and rare to southern India and Sri Lanka.

The said plant is very difficult to see, or it doesn’t comes in to the first sight, from my observations.
Thank you very much for sharing your experience.

Begonia malabarica Lam. [Begoniaceae]: Name: Begonia malabarica Lam.

Family: Begoniaceae
Habit: sub-shrub
Characteristic feature: adaxial (under-side) reddish
Photographed at Vaalparai, TN; on 12 July 2012
Habitat: edges of pathways in wet forests; especially on rocky crevices and rocks
Dear all, is this identification right? please correct me if I am wrong.

This is Begonia dipetala var dipetala and not B. malabarica. Begonia malabarica is an endemic species in Kerala. All the names published under the name B. malabarica from other part of India need a careful study.
In fact, B. malabarica was based on Rheede’s Tsjeria-narinampuli. It was validated by Lamark. It is an endemic species of kerala.
For further Reading kindly see{ 1}Santhosh Kumar E.S., Seema G. Gopal and G.M. Nair 2005. Re-appearance of Rheede’s Tsjeria-narinampuli – Its identity after the discovery and a note its allied species. Begonian 72 (Jul/Aug): 135-140.

Thank you …, what are the peculiar character that diffrentiate B.dipetala from B.malabarica? As you said, it is being reported from TN too.

With only two petals seen in all the flowers, this should be Begonia dipetala.
