This is what BOTANICA a Publication by Random House Australia says about Caliiendra surinamensis (PINK TASSEL-FLPWER). “This tropical species comes from the Guiana’s region of northern South America. It is an elegant shrub of erect open habit up to about 3m tall with arching branches and ferny foliage. The flower heads are distinctive, forming narrow inverted cones that are scattered along the upper sides of the branches, white at the base but tipped rose pink. They appear through much of the year and attract butterflies.”
Attaching four images. I check up the details on net but could not find the differences of this species from with Calliandra haematocephala Hassk.. Same doubt for me as well. It is very difficult to pinpoint the sps Id from photographs. Nevertheless, please check the following links for comparison.
Calliandra haematocephala x surinamensis Nana – Calliandra surinamensis – http://toptropicals.CALLIANDRA_SURINAMENSIS.htm
You can view photographs of many other species of Calliandra too in this website. Please compare and decide.
Thanks, … Basic question is whether this species is cultivated in India or not.
From the data from ILDIS & other net sources, I feel a few observations here & there might have been wrongly reported.
It is not reported in India (except for a reference of 1914) as per ILDIS in contrast to references of Calliandra haematocephala C. surinamensis Benth. was reported as cultivated in gardens by Dr M. Sanjappa in his book Legumes of India (1992). He is an authority on Indian legumes and can be trusted. 1914 is the reference of this book in ILDIS. Sorry, … I did not check up properly & made a horrible mistake. Thanks for pointing out.
Thank you … As you know I am not a botanist. I try to identify plants in my surroundings as a hobby. And I learn new lessons every day. FROM THE NATURE: I think Calliandra haematocephala Hassk. as per comparative images at Calliandra the flower in the image is of Calliandra srinamensis.
