Hooghly Today : Alcea rosea Linnaeus (white): This year too the gateman of the same level-crossing is growing Alcea rosea Linnaeus. He has three varieties, white, pink and plale-pink.


Nice photographs. Just a minor point, Linnaeus is now better written as L. in scientific citations.

Althea rosea (family : Malvaceae) Hooghly, WB:  I found this beautiful garden plant in front of a gateman’s cabin at a railway level crossing in Hooghly district (West Bengal). This winter they produced some wonderful season flowers in a very small, rather tiny piece of land lying between the rails!

i have this plant for many many years found this plant near a hill. the seeds are green colored. pls mention the Hindi name as well.


… looks like the hollyhock, Alcea rosea (syn. Althaea chinensis, Althaea ficifolia, Althaea rosea) … not native of India.
But the leaves of hollyhock are not as deeply lobed as seen here.
