06082011 Arachis hypogea: This is intended to be in continuation of … thread on the subject plant. In case some member is unaware of how the legumes grow under ground when the flowers are above ground, I am attaching a picture showing the part of branch that grows prostrate. The axillary flowers after maturity send& nbsp; fruiting peduncles with a pointed tip into the ground. The legumes grow under ground (hypo-gea). Hence the plants are prevented from being erect, they are usually rolled over using an empty barrel so that peduncles reach ground easily. Its so clear. For many years even I use to wonder how roots bear the pods. Then in college heard about Hypogea. But again it was not known that hypogea was produced from fertilized flower. But instead was thought that it is a stem outshoot. Then use to wonder how seeds come in it? Then once I had also thought of underground flowers. Minor correction, correct spellings are hypogaea and not hypogea. . Considering that we sometimes see only 1 seed, sometimes 2 seeds in a peanut pod, sometimes 3 or even 4….then the question arises is it not decided that how many ovules does an ovary contain as in case of peanut? This is interesting question. Arachis I think can have upto 4 seeds. But, to form a proper fruit any ovary doesnt need all its ovule to be fertilized. The number of ovules should be genetic but it can also depend on the health (if the number is not 1 or 2) of plant as well as the type of inflorescence and type of fruit. How many ovules will turn into fruit is not genetic but a matter of chance. Usually plants prolong the viability of the stigma to be pollinated if they are virgin. But once pollinated the viability reduced drastically.
