Evergreen shrub, 1.5-2m; stems yellow or puriplish, unarmed or with a few weak spines 5-7mm.Leaves elliptic-lanceolate, 9-15 x 2-6cm, acuminate, base attenuate, subpetiolate, margins spinose-dentate, veins prominent beneath. Flowers 5-numerous in axilllary fascicles;pedicles 1-1.5cm.Sepals gradually increasing in size,outer broadly ovate, c 2 x 2mm, innermost elliptic, c 7 x 4mm. Petals obovate, c 6 x 3.5mm.Berries ellipsoid,c 8 x 5mm,black.

It looks close to Berberis insignis Hook.f. & Thomson.
Spines are usually absent in B. insignis, and its leaves are larger than B. wallichiana.
