Request Id for this plant. These varieties are currently in bloom
everywhere & the tall spikes look stately & quite spectacular. Pic
taken in Lalbagh -12-07-09.

Somebody had posted this earlier too. I thing it is Agave filifera.
The bloom that you see forms roots and drops down to grow into another plant. Each flower ultimately turns out to be an independent plant. given below is a link. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Agave_filifera01.jpg

It can very well be other bromeliad, or may even be something else. I simply don’t have any idea.

After my summer vacation ends I will check for flowers
