I think it may have been a young palm. My 2 pics were taken at ground level if I remember correctly.
opefully someone may confirm whether it is A Fish tail palm.

Arecaceae Fortnight 1-14 Aug 2014: Wallichia oblongifolia from Uttarakhand_DSR_2 : 3 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (1).
Wallichia oblongifolia Girff. (syn. Wallichia densiflora Mart.) is a native palm in Uttarakhand and few individuals of it are known here. Attached picture is of a small plant seen by me near Jeoli Kot Uttarakhand.
